Wertmuller re-emerged as a major film director through her friendship with actor Giancarlo Giannini, who had already established a reputation as a popular stage star.
Wertmuller directed him in a TV production, "Rita the Mosquito" (1966); Giannini then recommended a play she had written, "Two Plus Two Are No Longer Four," to Franco Zeffirelli, who agreed to produce it with Giannini starring.

Born in Rome in 1928, Lina Wertmuller (true name Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmuller von Elgg Spanol von Braucich) enrolled on stage directing courses at the Accademia Pietro Sharoff in 1951.
After gaining her diploma, she worked in the theatre with Garinei and Giovannini and became assistant director to Giorgio De Lullo.
Married to cinema and theatre stage designer Enrico Job, Lina Wertmuller has also published several novels, including "Essere o avere, ma per essere devo avere la testa di Alvise su un piatto d'argento" and "Avrei voluto uno zio esibizionista" (published by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore).

 Watching Lina Wertmuller
LIKE many members of Lina Wertmuller's American audience, I saw Love and Anarchy before seeing any of her other films, though it wasn't the first film she'd made.
I remember coming away from Love and Anarchy feeling both impressed by the obvious talent at work in it and vaguely troubled by the sensibility that the film seemed flickeringly to reveal.
