Lincoln Alexander was appointed by Governor General Jeanne Sauvé, on the advice of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, in 1985, the first fl person to serve in a vice-regal position in Canada.
The Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway (known locally as "the Linc"), a freeway through Hamilton, was named in his honour, though Lincoln Alexander has never held a driver's license of his own.
More recently, Alexander was recently declared the Greatest Hamiltonian in a reader vote done by The Hamilton Spectator in commerating the 160th anniversary of the town's founding and formation of the newspaper.

Alexander, Lincoln MacCauley, lawyer, parliamentarian, public servant, lieutenant-governor of Ontario (b at Toronto 21 Jan 1922).
With a BA from McMaster and a law degree from Osgoode Hall, Alexander practised law and entered politics as Conservative MP for Hamilton West in 1968, becoming the first fl Canadian to sit in the House of Commons.
In 1991, upon the expiration of his term of office as lieutenant-governor, Alexander accepted the post as chancellor of the University of Guelph.

 Nominations Sought for Lincoln Alexander Leadership Award - Canadian University Press Releases
Lincoln Alexander isn’t the easiest act to follow, but those who demonstrate the qualities of the longtime U of G chancellor just might end up with an award that bears his name.
The University’s Centre for Studies in Leadership (CSL) is seeking nominations for the Lincoln Alexander Outstanding Leader Award, to be presented at the annual U of G leadership banquet next June.
Alexander, U of G’s chancellor since 1991, received the inaugural award this past summer at a dinner hosted by the College of Management and Economics and the CSL, where it was announced that the award would be named in his honour.
