Even though the Continental Mark II was technically not a Lincoln, it featured the Lincoln hallmark spare tire hump in the trunk lid, was sold and serviced at Lincoln dealerships, and the vehicle's drivetrain and forebears also came from Lincoln; thus causing many to think of the Mark II as a Lincoln.
The Mark III was the first Mark produced by Lincoln itself since its predecessor the Continental Mark II was manufactured by Continental which for the two years of its manufacture was a separate Ford division apart from Lincoln.
Lincoln, with the Mark V and Continental, held out for the giant American car longer than anyone else, but after 1979 it would not be possible.

The Lincoln Continental Mark III was a personal luxury car produced by Lincoln and sold in North America in the 1969 through 1971 model years, although it actually became available in early 1968.
Though the Mark III was officially considered a 1969 model by Ford Motor Company, it was really a 1968 1/2 model due to its early production falling within the last few months of the 1968 model year.
In the Eldorado's case it was the Toronado; Lincoln, similarly, took the underpinnings of the 1968 Ford Thunderbird, built alongside Lincolns at Ford's Wixom, Michigan plant.

Continental Mark II The Continental name was revived in 1956 as a separate Ford brand, with its sole model being the Continental Mark II, a high-class luxury vehicle that if anything was even more exclusive then the original Continental, being one of the most expensive cars available at the time.
The first of a new Lincoln Continental Mark series, the Mark III was based on the four-door Ford Thunderbird chassis and was a two-door hardtop coupe competing at the top end of the personal luxury car segment, directly against the Cadillac Eldorado.

Mark I: The Mark I was made from 1939 through 1948, with the exception, of course, of the war years.
The first Continental was the Mark I, done at first as a styling excersise By Edsel Ford, and to be used by him on his winters in Fla. He told the engineers it had to look "Continental", hence the name.
Engineers at Ford thought that the '58-'60 Marks were not at all deserving of the "Mark" name, thus the number rollback to Mark III.

No one knows for sure why Lincoln reused the Mark III name again, some speculate it was because Ford was so unhappy with the slow sales of the 1958 Mark III, and they wanted to somehow pretend it never existed, and by reusing the name they were somehow changing history.
The 1970 Mark III was almost identical in appearance to the 1969 model, except it was updated with the new transmission/steering wheel/ignition key locking system that all Ford cars got for 1970.
Sales of the Mark III each year outpaced those of the Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado, which was the Mark's main competitor, but no doubt also impacted the sales of its sister, the Thunderbird, to some degree.

He had a fleet of Mark Lincolns for a while - a 1942 Mark I, a 1956 mark II, the 1970 Mark III, and a 1980 Mark V. He started to trade the Mark II in on the 1980 model, but the dealer wouldn't give him enough for it due to bad paint and exhaust.
Even so, the Mark III was on the other side of the country, and I really don't need anything else with wheels - especially one that gets 10 mpg.

Afcourse it is a Mark III, but i want to tell, that i have the only one Mark III from the world in a purple color delliverd from the factory plant in Wixom.
One of the formulas is for single stage enamel, the other two are for different grades of basecoat/clearcoat, and there may be a new one which is their new best grade.
Although the original was single stage acrylic enamel, most prominent Lincoln restorers and 100 point show car owners use base/coat clearcoat these days; we can figure that one out later.

A well-known collector/restorer/authority of prize-winning Lincoln and Continental automobiles has decided to part with his precious 1958 Continental Mark III Landau.
Earlier production 1958 Continentals without Dual-Range have only a "D" position for normal driving which means the car begins forward movement in 2nd gear from a stop.
Other late production features include "Continental" scripts embossed on the ashtray covers, cut pile carpet instead of loop pile carpet which was used on 1958 Continentals produced before January 1, 1958 and additional exterior bright trim and the usual mechanical enhancements learned from the earlier months of production.
