  LegacyRecordings.com: The Martinis
Formed in the wake of the Pixies breakup, the Martinis feature Joey Santiago and his wife Linda Mallari as the group's creative core.
Classically trained in voice and piano since grade school, Mallari came from a music-loving family and had been performing in some fashion since childhood.
Mallari offered to sing backing vocals for the Pixies (who had not performed any shows at that time), but since the band already had bassist/singer Kim Deal Mallari didn't join the group.

Mallari was born and raised in Woonsocket, Rhode Island by a Filipino father and a Czech mother.
Heady cocktail: Hardcore, punk and heavy metal were not part of Mallari's vocabulary until she met Santiago in 1987 in a bierkeller in Boston, and both immediately noticed they had something major in common.
Meanwhile, Linda is expecting the couple's second child, so that'll keep her busy while Joey brings in the nostalgia bucks.

Mallari offered to donate her talents and years of voice training to the then-embryonic Pixies (who hadn’t even played a show at that point), to which Joey countered with, “Oh, we already have a chick in the band.”
Throughout the Pixies days, Santiago and Mallari hung out, wrote songs and drank martinis; producing the earliest Martinis ideas, their name and the song “Free,” which appeared on the Empire Records soundtrack in 1995 (their last recorded appearance until the release of Smitten).
Although the music has a breezy demeanor—most likely a result of Mallari’s mom blasting Broadway in the house, her tour of duty with Up With People and her never-ending love of right-of-the-dial radio hits—the lyrics generally take a more sinister turn.

This exclusive e-interview of Joey Santiago and Linda Mallari was conducted in late April 2004 by Christophe Gourraud and Jean-Michel Biel for AlecEiffel.net.
Joey: One day Linda and I were hanging out and decided to use a four track recorder that we had for a while.
Linda: Joey and I starting writing music for fun - then we decided to start getting a bit more serious about it- Then we decided not to be so serious anymore and that's when the fun began.

With all of the post-Pixies depression smothering Boston, it should be comforting to know that there is still a decent related project, and it doesn't involve Frank or Kim.
The Martinis features the distinct guitar antics of Pixies' riffmeister Joey Santiago, matched with a new cast, including Linda Mallari on vocals, ex-Four Non-Blondes drummer Dawn Richardson, and ex-that dog Rachel Haden providing the bass (at least she did while they were in the studio).
If you were one of the three people who saw Empire Records, the Martinis had a song on the soundtrack called "Free" (this cut also kicks off their self-titled album).

So the project with guitar genius Joey Santiago (Pixies) and vocalist Linda Mallari (Up With People troupe) has finally come to fruition and they’ve released an 11 song record chalk full of insanely well-written rock songs.
Santiago used to play in this little band called the Pixies; a band that inspired another band that inspired a generation and a crapload of stupid Gap commercials.
“Walls of Silence,” and the album opener, “Flyer” are representative of both Mallari’s talent and Santiago’s guitar proficiency and the rest of the record combines the two sound architects in holy matrimony.

Right on the heel of one of alternative rock's most anticipated reunions this side of a séance table, Joey Santiago and chanteuse-wannabe Linda Mallari release their long-awaited debut album, Smitten.
While Joey Santiago may have impaled many a Pixies listener with his rusty guitar, thus cementing his large role in shaping the band's unique sound, he wasn't involved in the unique vision of the band, at least he wasn't credited with any (hell, even Lovering co-wrote two songs).
Although she seems to be a highly-regarded classically-trained musician, her chops just don't seem to cut the proverbial muster.

With the Martinis, Santiago is back at his old tricks, with the addition of songwriter/singer Linda Mallari.
There is nothing inherently wrong with Mallari's songwriting, all the basic elements for a successful song are here, but there is just something missing.
His guitar shifts with the songs, creating new and different feels for each track, but Mallari's voice draws it back to a common theme, so that it is hard to stray into undiscovered country.

In Music We Trust - Martinis, The: Smitten
On Smitten, the debut from The Martinis, Joey Santiago's (of The Pixies) other band, Joey Santiago (guitar) and Linda Mallari (vocals) deliver a guitar-driven, power-pop record that has a lot in common with The Pixies, though is more straight ahead than quirky.
Mallari's vocals give the sweet touch to Santiago's rocker heart, and together the duo, along with friends, knows how to make things both sugary and powerful.
Smitten is an apt title for a pop/rock record that will leave you Smitten from the beginning of the album throughout the end.

The eponymous 1998 self-release from former (and current, I suppose, considering the group's opportunistic reunion) Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and his wife Linda Mallari is all but impossible to find, and has been scaled back to the status of "demo" by some fansite discographies.
This is where listeners will find hooks and choruses similar to the ones on which The Pixies' reputation rests, not to mention a true demonstration of Mallari's vocal talent, alternating between monotone stoicism and compelling entreaties.

Santiago and his wife Linda Mallari continued the Martinis through the '90s, recording several demos and self-released albums.
Santiago also began a career composing soundtracks and incidental music, beginning with the score for 2000's Crime & Punishment in Suburbia, to which Black also contributed a track.
