Perry and Osbourne were scheduled to start the album just as the latter checked into rehab (see "Kelly Osbourne Checks Into Rehab For Painkiller Addiction"), so Perry spent three weeks writing music in the studio while Osbourne penned lyrics at her treatment center.
As usual for Perry, it's one of many projects for the songwriter/producer, and Osbourne's album served as a nice bridge between her work on Gwen Stefani's solo album and collaborating with genuine electro-clashers Fischerspooner.
Perry, who has become a bit frightened by the stage over the years, is so dedicated to the cause that she's planning a solo tour, but she's set a limit of 10 dates.

Linda Perry goes Pink in a big way
If anybody expected Linda Perry to turn up again on the music scene, it would not have been as writer-producer of the new smash hit by fluffy teen pop star Pink, whose debut album last year was an out-of-nowhere double-platinum hit.
Perry was the mouthy force behind 4 Non Blondes and the 1993 smash, "What's Up." She made a splash and was a ubiquitous presence on the local scene, jamming at the Bammies or partying onstage with heavy metal femmes Stone Fox, whose album she produced for her own modestly titled Rock Star Records.
Perry's manager is now fielding calls from labels wanting to sign her and other managers looking for her to produce ("I'm the transformer now," she said.

Perry is also unusual in her songwriting method: She spends time with an artist and then attempts to somehow get inside that artist’s mind, almost channeling as she writes the lyrics specific to that person.
Perry has said the process requires her to drop her ego, which is probably true, in a sense.
Linda Perry the solo artist may be a post-grunge vocal diva, but Linda Perry the songwriter/producer is just about anything she wants to be.

By this point, Perry had begun considering a second career; she even directed a messy art film called Pink As The Day She Was Born starring Les Claypool.
In mere months, however, she'd begin writing songs with pop singer Pink which, in mere years, would compel Perry to become such a powerful force in the music industry, that all she would have to do is politely ask Interscope president Jimmy Iovine for ownership of In Flight's masters in order to regain it.
In Flight was then, somewhat puzzlingly, fought for by noisy punk imprint Kill Rock Stars, who agreed to release the record under Perry's terms, as long as she played a scant 10 live dates in support of it.

Linda Perry's music is both subtle and bombastic, sweet and aggressive, and intellectually and sonically challenging.
Producer Bill Botrell (Sheryl Crow, Susanna Hoffs) helps Perry on the 1996 release as she digs deep into very personal subject matter that could get overwrought without the softly detailed arrangements and mixes.
There are a couple overly personal moments within the In Flight playlist, like the opener "In My Dreams," but Perry leans on her expressive vocals to keep the dangerously sincere material interesting.
