George Graham Reviews Linda Thompson's "Fashinably Late"
Linda Thompson remarried, and eventally released a couple of solo albums. But what had become a performance anxiety eventually overwhelmed Linda Thompson, leading to what is clinically called hysterical dysphonia, which left her literally unable to sing, or even speak at times.
Thompson had been away from the music scene, she was by no means forgotten, and Fashionably Late is filled with two generations of English folk artists, from Danny Thompson of the Pentangle and Dave Mattacks from Fairport Convention, to acclaimed young singer Kate Rusby, and her own now-rising son, Teddy Thompson.
Thompson and her son Teddy, nicely performed in an intimate setting that nevertheless boasts some impressive guests, Van Dyke Parks on the accordion, Richard Greene, formerly of the 60s band Seatrain on violin, Kate Rusby on backing vocals, and John Doyle, formerly of the acclaimed Celtic band Solas on the guitar.

Linda Thompson, Dreams Fly Away (Ryko 1996) - Britain's Linda Thompson, who recorded a terrific body of material with her ex-husband, Richard Thompson, is finally treated to a well-overdue retrospective with Dreams Fly Away.
Richard Thompson's songs were given terrific treatments by Linda, whose grave, lucid poise and disarming candor conveyed a timelessness, of ancient and modern, that allowed Richard, Linda, and their musicians to tie together many strands of British music.
Linda admits that many of the stories that came out of this period are true, including the rumor that she once hit Richard with a guitar on stage.

Linda`s vocals are a little less original, but more than adequate compared to other singers, and anyway, the imperfections of this album adds up to become perfection as a whole. The title song, for example: A rambunctious, messy, drunken, glorious thing, complete with a marching band and a primitive bassline, totally irresistible.
Linda's vocals are as good as ever, and she sings lead on more than half of the tracks here.
Thompson's guitar work remains a unique talent, and Linda's voice is just superb (I have yet to find a solo Richard album this satisfying, because with his penchant for such dark, unflinching material, a voice as beautiful as Linda's provides excellent counterpoint).

Thompson's most ambitious undertaking to date was a planned militia march on Washington, D.C., on September 19, 1994, where an ultimatum was to be delivered to the government.
Thompson ordered all participants to come "armed and in uniform," and that besides delivering the ultimatum, "The militia will arrest Congressmen who have failed to uphold their oaths of office, who will then be tried for Treason by citizens' courts." Realizing after several months that support for her march was lacking, Thompson called it off.
Thompson continues to appear at rallies and conferences around the country, on radio and on computer bulletin boards, promoting the militia cause and calling down thunder upon the American government and its law enforcement agencies.
