dr john boden, president of the msa medical panel, said van der linde had been found guilty of a doping offence and, as such, msa was obliged to sanction him and report the offence to the south african police services (as the substance used by van der linde was considered illegal).
in his response, van der linde said the substance, stanazolol, had been administered to him via a course of injections he had "received from a medically-unqualified third party" in an attempt to treat back pain (having previously had a back operation) and has appealed the decision.
van der linde was further fined r30 000 and his competition licence was suspended until february 20, which is two days before the south african season opener.

 Andrei Linde
Andrei Linde was born into science, in Moscow, on March 2, 1948, the son of two professors of physics at Moscow State University.
Linde soon recognized that a particular way of ending the inflationary epoch (called a "slow roll") could solve some of the problems of the original model, while preserving most of its important features.
Linde is the author of more than 200 papers and two books in the areas of particle physics, phase transitions, and cosmology.

 :: Universe or Multiverse ::
After his initial contribution to inflationary cosmology, Dr. Linde went on to propose other promising versions of this theory, such as "chaotic inflation." Published in 1986, his theory of a chaotic self-reproducing inflationary universe suggests that our universe is one of many inflationary universes that sprout from an eternal cosmic tree.
The winner of the Lomonosov Award of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Dr. Linde received the Oskar Klein Medal in physics in 2001 and last year shared the Dirac Medal awarded by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy on the centenary of Nobel laureate Paul Dirac's birth.
In three papers published last year with his wife, Renata Kallosh, Dr. Linde proposed that the dark energy, the haunting theoretical phenomenon reminiscent of Einstein's "cosmological constant," which is presently stretching spacetime at an ever increasing rate, may eventually become negative.

Universe or Multiverse? :: Dr. Andrei Linde
Linde is one of the authors of the inflationary cosmology, a theory that has revolutionized cosmology, and of the theory of cosmological phase transitions.
Linde tries to understand the complexities of the cosmos from clues hidden in distant exploding stars, in the echoes of the universe's earliest instants, and in the tangled equations of relativity and space-time.
In a startling new set of calculations, he and his physicist wife, Renata Kallosh, have proposed that our universe, which scientist believe began with a Big Bang, will collapse and end with a Big Crunch in something like the next 10 billion years.

Universe to last another 26 billion yrs
Linde, the magazine says, concludes that the Universe is likely to last for almost twice as long again as it has already existed, before collapsing back on itself in a 'big crunch'.
Linde's model relies on calculations made by Yun Wang, a cosmologist from the University of Oklahoma. "If we assume this model, the Universe will probably be safe for the next 24 billion years," Linde has said.

Cosmologist Andrei Linde awarded Dirac Medal for theoretical physics: 9/02
Stanford physics Professor Andrei Linde, whose theories on the origin of the universe have revolutionized the field of cosmology, has been named co-recipient of the 2002 Dirac Medal by the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.
Linde helped lay the foundation for inflationary cosmology in the 1980s while working at the Lebedev Physical Institute in his native Russia.
In 1986, four years before joining the Stanford faculty, Linde published the theory of a self-reproducing inflationary universe-- the idea that ours is but one of many inflationary universes that sprout from an eternal cosmic tree.

The Big Crunch / Instead of expanding forever, the universe may only have 10 billion years until it collapses
Linde and his wife are among a worldwide band of physicists and astronomers who are trying to puzzle out the complexities of the cosmos from clues hidden in distant exploding stars, in the echoes of the universe's earliest instants, and in the tangled equations of relativity and space-time.
To Andrei Linde, the eminent Moscow-born cosmologist at Stanford University, the end of the universe is nigh.
An art student and philosopher before he took to physics, Linde is one of the founders of the so-called "inflationary" universe scenario, a revolutionary concept that sees the early universe inflating in a sudden burst of speed after the Big Bang then settling into a more stable rate of expansion.

Cosmologist to ponder the alpha and omega of the universe
In 2003, Linde with co-authors Shamit Kachru and Renata Kallosh, both of Stanford, and Sandip Trivedi of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in India proposed a theory of dark energy—the residual energy in empty space that causes expansion of the universe to speed up—based on string theory.

Origin and fate of the Universe
But Linde freed the inflationary model from this limitation by showing that it could be produced simply by the presence of a special kind of field, called a scalar field, that particle physics has invoked to explain why particles have mass.
The "battle" is in fact a scientific disagreement between Andrei Linde, a physics professor at Stanford and well-known proponent of the inflationary universe theory, and Stephen Hawking, a prominent Cambridge University physicist and author of the best-selling book A Brief History of Time.
Linde also questioned the way the pair used the Hartle-Hawking equations that are the very basis of the no-boundary proposal.

New Scientist Breaking News - Universe might yet collapse in 'big crunch'
Linde and his colleagues calculate that the typical time for the Universe to start this collapse would be in 10 to 20 billion years from now.
But Linde says observations of supernovae, the leftover radiation from the big bang and galaxy distributions should help resolve the issue by pinning down the densities of dark energy and matter at different times in the past.
In August, Linde won the Dirac medal for his role in developing this theory.

Ultimate fate of the universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meanwhile, physicists such as Andrei Linde, Alan Guth, Edward Harrison, and Ernest Sternglass have demonstrated that inflationary cosmology strongly suggests the presence of a multiverse, and that it would be practical even with today's knowledge for intelligent beings to de novo generate and transmit information into a distinct universe.
Moreover, recent theoretical work on the unresolved quantum gravity problem and the Holographic Principle has indicated that traditional physical quantities may possibly themselves be describable in terms of exchanges of information, which in turn raises questions about the applicability of older cosmic models.
The Final anthropic principle states that the evolution of life is inevitable and, once it comes into being, will never die out.

The Big Lab Experiment - Was our universe created by design? By Jim Holt
Linde, it should be said, is famous for his mock-gloomy manner, and these words were laced with irony.
Linde has been amply honored for his achievement, most recently by being awarded the 2004 Cosmology Prize of the Peter Gruber Foundation (along with Alan Guth, another pioneer of the theory of cosmic inflation).
Linde's picture was as unsatisfying as Voltaire's idea of a creator who established our universe but then took no further interest in it or its creatures.
