Linderhof is Ludwig's smallest palace; it was really intended to be just a "villa" for him to retreat to, although it's certainly large enough to be spectacular.
It is thought that Ludwig was quite nearsighted and was too vain to wear glasses, and this is one reason that he wanted his palaces to be decorated so brightly.
Also on its grounds are classical gardens, a Moorish kiosk (reflecting Ludwig's love of all things oriental), and Hunding's Hut (a copy of a stage set from one of Wagner's opera scenes - it includes a replica tree where Ludwig and friends could re-enact their favorite scenes).

We liked the out-of-the-ordinary Linderhof, created in Louis XIV rococo style (the gold and white bedroom is stunning), and the park incorporates beautiful fountains.
In addition to the palace are a small but cherce Moorish kiosk with a peacock throne and a large grotto containing a lake on which King Ludwig II would ride in a swan boat to Wagnerian music.
Linderhof is very nice, but I wouldn't call it a castle any more than I would call the White House a castle.

Also, check the web if Linderhof is open.I believe I read somewhere that it is curtrently closed for renovationms.
Rather than trying to do Linderhof in the same day - do something few castle visitors seem to do, trek into the lovely hills and woods abutting the castle and look around Fussen itself, a nice small town with a large waterfall right in it.
After Linderhof carry on past Reutte and criss-cross the Austrian/German border to Fussen.
