The first case in Mtwara region was reported in 1985 and 139 cases were reported in 1991; among blood donors, HIV carriers were reported to be 5,5 percent in 1991 (Pius et al 1991) and 7.3 percent in 1995 in the Mtwara Urban (Mtwara Urban District 1997).
In Ligula Regional Hospital in Mtwara Urban 7 percent of 2795 blood donors were HIV-positive; in Masasi district and Ndanda Hospital as a whole,, 16 percent of 5113 donors were so reported as were in Newala District Hospital 3.1 percent of 854 donors in 1993.

 The Cambridge Mpingo Project
In the first expedition, Tanzanian Mpingo 96, a detailed botanical survey was undertaken close to the village of Mchinga in the Lindi region of Southeast Tanzania and meetings were held with local people to discover their knowledge of and attitudes towards Mpingo.
The second expedition Tanzanian Mpingo 98 covered a larger area of forest throughout Lindi and produced valuable results on the ecology of the species.
The Mpingo Survey 2000 on the CMP website is the proposal for a very ambitious survey of mpingos in the Lindi region of southern Tanzania during the summer of 2000 and is an excellent source of valuable information regarding many timely conservation issues for mpingo.

Mahita, who is Tanzania’s Inspector General of Police(IGP), said the region is grappling with increased trafficking of illegal drugs, car and livestock theft, illegal transfer and possession of firearms.

But Hooper found evidence that some Camp Lindi chimpanzees were killed and their kidneys sent to the Wistar laboratories in Philadelphia and possibly Belgium, where the vaccines used in Africa were apparently made.
Three of the chimpanzees were from a subspecies (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) found in the West African nations of Cameroon and Gabon.
