The rock itself rises 105 metres from the plain and is a small steep-sided volcano known as a mamelon that was formed six million years ago over a vent in the earth.
Hanging Rock has been a favourite backdrop for social gatherings since the early days of European settlement, and was reputedly a hideout for bushrangers like ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan during the heady gold rush days.

Playback St. Louis Reviews -Freaks and Geeks
Freaks and Geeks is set in 1980s Michigan, and centers on Sam and Lindsay Weir; Sam is a freshman in high school, and Lindsay is a sophomore.
Sam hangs out with the “geek” crowd (which is pretty self-explanatory), while Lindsay is trying to transition from the geeks to the “freaks,” or burnouts, as they are otherwise known.
geeks really look like geeks, the burnouts’ eyes are red and hair unkempt, and minor players are often unfortunately fat, have bad, prepubescent mustaches, or are so stupid looking you wish you could punch them (despite what it sounds like, this is a good thing).

Created by writer-comedian Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings--former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)--as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980.
What separated Freaks and Geeks from most other scholastic series was its brutal honesty--Lindsay and Sam, as well as their friends and parents, were given very human personas that showed failure, malice, indecision, and moments of great clarity.
Sam (John Daley, playing Lindsey's brother), is a scrawny freshie who has the damndest getting comfortable with anything.

Interview With Peter Weir:Picnic At Hanging Rock
Picnic At Hanging Rock is adapted from a 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay.
Although Joan Lindsay's novel contains hints of the Rock as another time zone, its style combines the omniscient condescension of an Agatha Christie (characters neatly slotted into defined social stations and good-humoured servants kept above suspicion) with a streak of purple pantheism.
It is Peter Weir's second feature, Picnic At Hanging Rock, that is causing the excitement.
