Lindsey Davis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
This is Lindsey Davis' 9th Falco novel and it continues the intriguing life of Roman detective and super-sleuth Marcus Didius Falco through the streets of Rome in his hunt to track down villains and unsavoury members of society.
Lindsey Davis never fails to come up with the goods and here we find Falco back from Spain and in partnership with his old friend Petronius.
Lindsey Davis was recently voted as one of the top 50 authors in the Waterstone’s Reading Survey and received the 1999 Sherlock Award for Best Comic Detective for her creation, Marcus Didius Falco.

  Lindsey Davis
Lindsey Davis, historical novelist, was born in Birmingham, England during the 1950s.
Having taken a degree in English literature at Oxford University (Lady Margaret Hall), she became a civil servant.
A further thirteen Falco novels have followed, as well as a "straight" historical novel set in the same period (the reign of Vespasian), The Course of Honour (1998).

Davis writes about the early Empire, specifically the time of the Emperor Vespasian, who showed endurance as the fourth in the Year of the Four Emperors who followed Nero in rapid succession (69 AD; the other three were the late Galba, the late Otho, and the late Vitellius).
Both Saylor and Davis have excellent knowledge of ancient Roman history, and she is especially notable for the minutiae of everyday life in Rome that give her story a fine feeling of place.
I didn't discover Davis and Falco until she had already had written a half dozen or so books, and now I'm enjoying catching up (my wife is, too).

The further Davies gets into her series of private eye (or, to be precise, public informer) thrillers set in the Rome of Vespasian, the more she learns what it is that she does best.
But what we read Davies for is partly for the continuing soap opera of on-the-make Falco, his upper-class wife Helena and their variously rackety, lowlife or snobbish connections, and partly for her simply wonderful knowledge of how things worked.
Davis continues to go from strength to strength - her grasp of historical minutiae is unrivalled, her characterisation finer and finer as the series continues and the plots are witty, intricate and satisfying.

THE MYSTERY READER reviews: The Jupiter Myth by Lindsey Davis
Author Lindsey Davis has been delighting audiences with her Roman mysteries for years, and her latest is no exception.
Davis has a wonderful ability to juggle multiple storylines, mysterious and otherwise, effectively, ensuring that all the threads enrich the main plot without distracting from it.
Davis also does exceptional work with her characters, particularly the villains of the piece.

Davis's books are always at their best when Falco, as our viewpoint, is finding out something he does not know about how things work; this is a good detective story partly because of the exposition of the Roman legal system and not in spite of it.
It also helps that it is one of the Davis novels in which Falco over-reaches and finds himself distinctly out of his depth; he is one of the most attractive of historical detectives because he is not infallible.
The convoluted case, which involves a wealthy, fractious family and tricky questions of inheritance, gives Davis the opportunity to explore the vagaries of Roman law, which she approaches with her usual mix of respect and sarcasm.

Amazon.com: The Accusers: Books: Lindsey Davis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Author Lindsey Davis offers a look at some of the vagaries of Roman law, couched in a lot of snappy British repartee, and Glover is just the right reader to make it work.
Lindsey Davis fifteenth Falco novel finds him back on home territory and we settle easily back in to the comfort that is Imperial Rome (though Davis does explore some new writing styles to keep it fresh) with an alacrity that was missing from the preceding two efforts.
Lindsey Davis' imaginatively conceived "The Accusers" is an historical fiction set in 75 A.D. Rome following the exploits of her protagonist Marcus Didius Falco.

However, Davis' Rome is not Saylor's Rome and her humor is not the same brand as Peters'.
Davis relies much more heavily on sarcasm than Peters and her Rome is a much lighter and grubbier one than Saylor's.
Davis does manage to resist the temptation to infuse her characters with completely modern consciences, especially when it comes to such difficult issues as slavery and torture.

Amazon.co.uk: See Delphi and Die: Books: Lindsey Davis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
See Delphi and Die is built, like several of Lindsay Davis' recent episodes of the adventures of her Roman private detective Falco, around the fact that the ancient world had a surprising number of versions of amenities we consider modern.
Like many of Lindsay Davis' books, See Delphi and Die is inventive in the twists and turns of its plot and includes one of the nastier last page twists of narrative she has ever imagined.
The only real weakness here is that over seventeen books, Davis has built up a large cast of supporting characters and has to find in every book tasks for some of them to do, producing rather too many red herrings in the process.
