Lindy Hop is a fusion of many dances from all over the U.S. from the early 1900s, but mainly the Charleston.
Lindy hop combines the movements and improvization of African dances with the formal 8-count structure of European dances.
George Snowden renamed the dance from Breakaway to Lindy Hop at dance contests at the Harvest Moon Ball in Central Park in September 1927 or at the Savoy Ballroom in 1928 (the story varies).

Lindy Hop never really died out, as it continued to be occasionally danced by older couples who had learned the dance as teenagers in the 1940s, and by a few small groups of new young dancers.

Social dances (and the lindy was and is a social dance) perform many functions: as an artistic medium for personal expression to music, as a means for commentary on other people and policitical institutions, and as a means to demonstrate one's coordination, musical sense, and strength.
The Lindy dance used patterns that often broke down into sets of six or eight beats, with kicks and footwork that were only limited by the dancer's imagination and willingness to practice.

Lindy Hop is mostly a state of mind -- it starts when you have fantasies about being Fred (or Ginger) and living in a time when everything was elegant and every major trauma turns out to be a simple misunderstanding.
It was danced to music (principally Swing) in fast duple meter ("8 to the bar") and was characterized especially by "breakaways" in which partners in a couple separated and improvised steps individually.
The pants were ideal for performing the kicks and jumps involved in Lindy Hop, and the fashion trend evolved to feature extremes in both dimension and color.

For those of you who may not know, Lindy Hop is the original swing from the 1930's and 1940's done to the music of such greats as Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, and such modern composers as, my personal favorite, Bill Elliott (a local L.A. Band Leader/composer).
Lindy Hop grew out of many of the dances of the 1920's.
There are two main styles of Lindy Hop, the Savoy style, which is characterized by long horizontal lines (Frankie Manning is a good example), and the G.I. style, which is more upright (Dean Collins is a good example).
