Cable impedance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The key tenet of all transmission line theory is that the source impedance must be equal to the load impedance in order to achieve maximum power transfer and minimum signal reflection at the destination.
Second, you want the electrical load on the output end of the cable, to have an input impedance equal to the characteristic impedance of the cable, so that all of the power goes into the load rather than being reflected from the load back into the cable.
Engineers can design the PCB traces so that they have the proper capacitance and inductance values so that the transmitter will see nothing but a proper impedance transmission line.

IEEE History Center - Milestones List
Electrical pulses, transmitted through two miles of wire, caused an electromagnet to ink dots and dashes (grouped to represent letters and words) on a strip of paper.
Electricity produced here in the spring of 1891 was transmitted 2.6 miles over rugged and at times inaccessible terrain to provide power for operating the motor-driven mill at the Gold King Mine.
Its design and construction represented an outstanding electrical engineering accomplishment due to its length, the mountainous country over which it was constructed, and the unusually severe weather conditions under which it operated.

After each line is written, when the beam returns back to the left, the signal is blanked (remember, the standard was invented before digital video!).
However lines number 248 to 263 and 511 to 525 are typically blanked to provide time for the beam to return to the upper left hand corner for the next scan.

The design studio approach not only shows students that there is more to electrical engineering than analyzing circuits, it also provides a venue for exposing them to various fields that they might like to study.
They learned more through this design studio than they did through problem-workout sessions.  They were challenged with problems that required thought and careful consideration.  The modules were designed to show the students that the real heart of engineering is solving problems with no single solution.
“Traditionally, engineering has been taught with a ‘from the bottom up’ approach.  Engineering is actually from the top down.  You go from the need and carry it to the next level.
