Linears are not only designed to be optimally efficient from the standpoint of land, energy and resource utilization, but they are also designed to be optimally efficient from the standpoint of human interactions.
Linears can be thought of as testbeds to evaluate the relative performance of groups which are all equally affluent (by virtue of being able to afford to live in a linear in the first place), but which have fundamentally different racial, ethnic or normative characteristics.
Linears would also be designed as homogeneous communities in an attempt to regain some of the sense of community, or gemeinshaft, that has been lost in modern multicultural, multiethnic, multiracial states.

The linear city design was first developed by Arturo Soria y Mata in Spain during the 19th century, but was promoted by the Soviet planner Nikolai Alexander Milyutin in the late 1920s.

 Polycentric Linear City
Originally, cities came about to join people, to enhance their security, to favor the exchange of goods, information and emotions; to eventually expand their individual selves into a wider social conscience.
These transit systems had to be combined through very dense neighborhoods because only a very high ridership could justify the operational costs of manual frequent service, and had to be kept underground or separated from buildings because of their noise, vibrations and structural requirements.
New steel or alloy wheels are much quieter, especially at low speeds and curvature levels, which are typical in proximity of station areas. At medium and low speeds, noise of the system is a function of suspension/guidance interaction, vehicle engineering, propulsion and AC noise, guideway insulation and structural separation.

However, the City’s Linear Park Master Plan has been approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission as well as the City Council.

A Year in the Linear City is an intriguing novella, full of exotic characters and locations.
The book is not driven by a single storyline but, as its title suggests, presents a year in the life of the city through eyes of a 'cosmogonic fiction' author named Diego.
The choice of the protagonists occupation is revealing, as it leads to some mild reverse snobbism of non-genre authors, but as Di Fililpo seems destined to have his career unduly consigned to small publishers this is understandable.

Paul Di Filippo: A Year in the Linear City - an infinity plus review
Di Filippo's protagonist, Diego Patchen, lives in the 10,394,850th block of the city's one through street, Broadway, in Gritsavage, one of the city's many many boroughs.
A subway runs under Broadway for the length of the city, however long that may be; each block is separated from the next by a short cross street, the depth of the buildings on either side of Broadway; and then, on one side there is the river and on the other the railroad.
But by Diego's reckoning, then, A Year in the Linear City is not a good example of CF, its ideas left relatively unexplicated (even by the end, much of this world simply is), its mysteries left mysterious.
