Linear motor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A linear motor is essentially an electric motor that has had its stator "unrolled" so that instead of producing a torque (rotation), it produces a linear force along its length.
Outside of public transportation, vertical linear motors have been proposed as lifting mechanisms in deep mines, and the use of linear motors is growing in motion control applications.
High-acceleration linear motors also require very strong magnetic fields; in fact, the magnetic fields are often too strong to permit the use of superconductors.

Through electromagnetic induction, the rotating magnetic field induces a current in the conductors in the rotor, which in turn sets up a counterbalancing magnetic field that causes the rotor to turn in the direction the field is rotating.
Induction motors are the workhorses of industry and motors up to about 500 kW (670 horsepower) in output are produced in highly standardized frame sizes, making them nearly completely interchangeable between manufacturers (although European and North American standard dimensions are different).
A linear motor is essentially an electric motor that has been "unrolled" so that, instead of producing a torque (rotation), it produces a linear force along its length by setting up a traveling electromagnetic field.

Linear motion: An introduction to linear induction motors: Explain that Stuff!
Linear motors are used in maglev trains, which have been enthusiastically developed in both Germany and Japan.
Linear motors are now used in all sorts of machines that require linear (as opposed to rotational) motion, including overhead traveling cranes and beltless conveyors for moving sheet metal.
In a traditional electric motor, a central core of tightly wrapped magnetic material (known as the rotor) spins at high speed between the fixed poles of a magnet (known as the stator) when an electric current is applied.

A linear motor is conceptually a rotary motor whose stator core has been cut and unrolled.
The moving member in a linear motor is typically a solid conducting plate or sheet.

The primary difference between linear electric motors and conventional electric motors is the length of either the primary or the secondary.
When the motor designs are completed and evaluated, it is likely that additional research will focus on optimizing the track itself: characterizing the lift magnets that provide the levitation forces and determining the best shape for the fixed reaction rail against which the LIMs will push.

Linear Motors and Stages: Baldor, a leader in motion control, servo, linear motors, energy efficient electric motors ...
Linear motors consist of two parts – a stationary track or “platen” and a moving “forcer”.
They can be provided as a stand-alone linear motor assembly or as a complete stage – built with a housing or enclosure with linear bearings, limit switches, cable track/carrier, protective bellows and linear encoder in a wide variety of lengths.
The linear induction motor consists of a “primary” which is a coil assembly, and a “reaction plate”.

Roller Coaster Research Paper   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Linear Induction Motors are integrated into roller coasters by making fins out of a non-ferrous, conductive metal, usually brass or aluminum, that act as the reaction plates and are attached to each side of the train (Reitz).
Linear Synchronous Motors are incorporated into roller coasters by placing the motors between the rails of the track along a straight section.
LIMs are often designed to go on the sides of the track because this eliminates structural design challenges created by placing the LIMs in the center of the track.

Typically, the "rotor" or reaction plate in a linear induction motor is a non-magnetic conductor such as aluminum or copper.
Inductive motors propel a conductive reaction plate (or wound rotor coil) along a moving magnetic field by inducing a secondary magnetic field in the rotor.
Linear induction motors require either a ferrous backing plate on the reaction plate, or a matched stator coil to form a double-sided LIM in order to provide an adequate magnetic field in the reaction plate.

In the past, linear motors have generally been constrained to the stroke of a single stator, limiting the range of motion.
If this limitation can be surmounted, linear motors can overcome many of the limitations inherent in conveyor systems including high maintenance, low accelerations, uncontrolled movement profiles, and the inability to independently move individual payloads.
Numerous motor metrics, including efficiency measurements, are used to show how axial motor performance compares to other motor types and some of the fundamental differences between radial and axial motors are examined.

A basic LIM roller coaster works by placing hundreds of tiny motors along the coaster track at key places were acceleration will be needed – at the launching pad and at the base of each element (twists, turns, inversions, etc.).
Within an LIM the stator (the fixed part of a rotating machine) is flattened out so that it will produce a linear force along its length.
This coaster uses LIMs to accelerate the ride through the ride in one direction, and when the end of the track is reached LIMs once again accelerate the ride, this time to ride the track backwards.

Although peak reactive demand actually turned out to be much greater than expected, motor terminal voltage is now precisely maintained, so operation of the roller coaster is consistently successful.
