Lingmell, Wasdale Head - Grange Hotel
The steep slopes of Lingmell tower above the fields and cottages of Wasdale Head.
Apart from good views of Wasdale, Lingmell’s most notable feature is Piers Gill, a dry gorge carved into the eastern slopes like a deep gash.
The bed of the gill, boulder strewn and in shadow for most of the day, is a haven for scramblers, but best avoided for the casual walker.

I walked from the car park near Wasdale Head onto the shoulder of Lingmell and up to the summit of Lingmell, then across the Corridor Route onto Round How (one of the unknowns in the highest 100 peaks in the Lake District), then up onto Great End.
After parking the car, I crossed Lingmell Beck, which appeared to be dry, though I suspect there was water under the stones.
Whether their state indicated they were now out of date or not was unclear, but there was little else to do but carry on.

Scafell Pike 3,210'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The original intention was to continue from Scafell Pike to Scafell, then traverse back under Pikes Crag to reach Lingmell, but a navigational error leaving the Pike, poor weather and impending sunset meant that we decided to skip Scafell.
Leaving the summit, a careless bit of navigation left us on the path down to the Lingmell col. I initially realised and corrected, but we didn't go quite far enough south across the sloping plateau to reach the path to Mickledore.
This is a simple ascent from the col, but with very steep drops to the west near the summit.

 Lingmell
Lingmell was in clear view as we set off along the main path across the footbridges towards Brown Tongue, though the actual summit, as is usually the case with the high fells, could not yet be seen.
By the time we reached Hollow Stones it was extremely hot and we, and the hoardes of walkers making their way to Scafell Pike, were getting quite tired, so we decided that this was a good spot for some lunch and a rest, while we admired the scenery around us.
The path to the summit from Lingmell Col was quite rocky, but nowhere near as bouldery as we remembered the path to Scafell Pike to be from there.

By incorporating the western ridge of Lingmell into the ascent the walker gains height quickly and is rewarded with correspondingly superior views of Scafell and the cliffs of Scafell Pike.
From the Wasdale Head walk west along the road for a few minutes and then cross a field to the small bridge across Lingmell Beck, turning right (west) to contour up the toe of Lingmell.
Progress is now easier across a high sheepwalk until the outcrops of the summit area are encountered.
