The loyalty of the Lingones to the Roman government was beyond dispute.
The legionaries and Lingones who had supported the Roman government by suppressing the revolt of Vindex, now discovered that their loyalty was explained as an attempt to prevent Galba's accession.
A second army, consisting of I Adiutrix, VIII Augusta, and XI Claudia, was officially commanded the new emperor's son Domitian (in fact by Appius Annius Gallus) and overcame the Lingonian revolt.

Lingones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Lingones were a Celtic tribe that originally lived in Gaul in the area of the headwaters of the Seine and Marne rivers.
The Gaulish Lingones were thoroughly Romanized by the first century, living in a rich and urbanized society in the region of Langres and Dijon and minting coins, but getting caught up in the Batavian rebellion (AD 69), described by Tacitus.
In Roman Britain, two cohorts of Lingones, probably subscripted from among the Lingones who had remained in the area of Langres and Dijon are attested in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, from dedicatory inscriptions and stamped tiles.

In the war waged under the auspices of the Emperor Caesar Domitianus Augustus Germanicus and begun by Julius Civilis in Gaul, the very wealthy city of the Lingones, which had revolted to Civilis, feared that it would be plundered by the approaching army of Caesar.

 Tacitus: History: Book 4 [70]
Accordingly neither the Treveri, the Lingones, nor the other revolted States, took measures at all proportioned to the magnitude of the peril they had incurred.
Roman generals and Emperors entered your territory, as they did the rest of Gaul, with no ambitious purposes, but at the solicitation of your ancestors, who were wearied to the last extremity by intestine strife, while the Germans, whom they had summoned to their help, had imposed their yoke alike on friend and foe.
Nor are the Treveri and Lingones bound by any ties of affection; once let their fear cease, and they will resume their arms." Classicus put an end to these differences of opinion by giving his approval to the suggestions of Tutor, which were at once acted on.

The Batavian revolt 7: The Gallic empire
They had seen that the three legions that had temporarily lifted the siege of Xanten (I Germanica, XVI Gallica, XXII Primigenia) were too small to deal effectively with the situation.
The last Roman success was the relief of Mainz (which was now garrisoned with the Fourth legion Macedonica and the Twenty-second), but when general Gaius Dillius Vocula set out to offer help to the garrison at Xanten, his Treviran and Lingonian auxiliaries deserted.
As we will see, the Trevirans and Lingones were fully romanized and wanted to start an empire of their own -the Gallic empire- whereas the Batavians wanted independence of some sort (their war aims are discussed above).

 The Attack On Vetera
Julius Civilis had renewed the siege of the Fifth legion Alaudae and Fifteenth legion Primigenia at Vetera, and the Trevirans and Lingones, ancient Gallic but romanized tribes living along the Mosel and upper Rhine, decided to revolt, too.
The last Roman success was the relief of Mainz (which was now garrisoned with the Fourth legion Macedonica and the Twenty-second), but when general Caius Dillius Vocula set out to offer help to the garrison at Vetera, his Treviran and Lingonian auxiliaries deserted.
The result was that the Gauls invited the Trevirans and Lingones to stop their aggression, especially now that the Gallic emperor was (or seemed) dead.

The legions were on the verge of mutiny, when Hordeonius Flaccus ordered the envoys to depart, and to make their departure more secret, directed them to leave the camp by night.
The inhabitants of Colonia Agrippinensis, the Treveri, and the Lingones, shewed as much zeal as the army, making offers of personal service, of horses, of arms and of money, according as each felt himself able to assist the cause by his own exertions, by his wealth, or by his talents.

 Gaul, Iberia, & Galatia
Some scholars believe Celtic evolved from proto-Indo-European around 1000 B.C. The iron-using Celtic Hallstatt culture gave rise to the La Tene Celts in the fifth century B.C. The people of Gaul spoke a P-Celtic language that was similar to the Celtic languages of Britain.
The Celtic tribes of Gaul included the Ligures, Saluvii, Volcae Arecomice, Volcae Tectosages, Tarbelli Ausci, Boii, Cadurci, Allobroges, and Helvii in the south, the Petrocorii, Santones, Pictones, Lemovices, Averni, Velavii, Segusiavii, Sequani, Mandubii, Bituriges Cubi, Carnutes, and Lingones in the middle, and the Veliocasses, Caletes, Ambiani, Atrebates, Morini, and Menapii in the north.
Vercingetorix was strangled in Rome six months later on the orders of Caesar in 51 B.C. The last of the resistance leaders was Commios, the Atrebatian.

Or perhaps the recruited Celtic/Roman troops were influenced in their choice of 'genuis loci', Verbeia, by the native Celts of West Yorkshire, the Brigantes (whose name derives from the goddess Brigantia, related to Brigid), who may have already carved the stone.
