visordown - Soft Link or Split link ?
If you have to swap the chain a lot when re-gearing a split is certainly the easier option, and IMO if you don't reuse them too often they are just as safe as a soft link with the added advantage that you don't have to lug a chain splitter around.
Bit of a horror story here I know someone who built a gsxr powered trike and the chain parted at splitlink, thin seat, I'll leave the details to your imagination but left inner thigh and directly between buttocks were injured area's when chain snapped.

The Back To GOD Hour - GOD’S GOLDEN CHAIN - Predestination
The next link in God’s golden chain is especially beautiful: "those God called, he also justified." This word justified means that when God calls you and moves you to repentance and faith in Christ, he forgives all your sins—past, present, and future sins--and declares you to be forever right with him.
The third link in God’s golden chain, after foreknew and predestined is called." God's choosing and predestination don't stay hidden in the heights of heaven or in the mists of eternity.
The first link in the chain would be flimsy, manmade paper, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Alameda Bicycle - Chain Replacement And Repair
Though most chains today use the special pins or link, this is still a good thing to understand, because you can use this approach to get home should you break a chain and not have a replacement pin or link for the repair (you should repair the chain correctly when you get home).
Now place the chain tool on the chain so that the link you're working on is seated completely and resting against the back (strongest) shelf of the tool with the tool's pin aligned to press directly on the special replacement pin when you turn the tool's handle (photo, right).
Modern chains are very narrow, and even a small amount of misalignment in the pin where it sits in the outer plate could cause the chain to break under load.
