What is link farming? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
The idea behind link farming is to increase the number of sites that link to yours because search engines such as Google rank sites according to, among other things, the quality and quantity of sites that link to yours.
In theory, the more sites that link to yours, the higher your ranking in the search engine results will be because the more links indicate a higher level of popularity among users of the Internet.
There are many service providers who promise to help you boost your link popularity by automatically entering you into link exchange programs they operate, often linking your page with Web sites that have nothing to do with your content.

Link popularity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Link popularity is a measure of the quantity and quality of other web sites that link to a specific site on the World Wide Web.
Link popularity assumes that not all incoming links are equal, as an inbound link from a major directory carries more weight than an inbound link from an obscure personal home page.
To increase link popularity, many webmasters interlink multiple domains that they own, but often search engines will filter out these links, as such links are not independent votes for a page and are only created to trick the search engines.

 LINK FARM
Link farms save space when one is maintaining several nearly identical copies of the same source tree -- for example, when the only difference is architecture-dependent object files.
Link farms are normally created programmatically, rather than by human beings.
These link farms may also be used to promote other websites, directly or indirectly.

Farm labor advocates will see it as an attempt by the growers to reduce their costs.
That amnesty was linked to steps by Congress to crack down on subsequent illegal immigration -- steps that largely failed.
Farm worker advocates also take a dim view of an amnesty plan that would require years of work in the fields as a condition for receiving a green card.

 Warning!! Link Farm Ahead
These pages with countless links to other websites were created during the fervor of link popularity when it was thought that the more links that linked to your website, the higher your website ranked in search engines such as Google.
The page they put your link on isn't linked to FROM any page, meaning it's floating out there in never-never land and is a ploy to get you to link to their site.
They don't seem to know that links leak PageRank in Google, not the other way around or that the link that does you the most good is the one that shares space on a page with about 2 other outbound links, not 3596 other ones.

 Domain-Pop.com - Link Farm
The main purpose of a link farm is to deceive the indexing programs of Internet search engines that assign rankings according to the number of pages that link to a specific page.
If the link farm works as planned, the search engine will believe that the promoted page is hugely popular because of all the pages that link to it and give it a high ranking.
Search engine operators consider link farms an abuse and attempt to detect them, to remove them from their indices or penalize their content rank.

A link farm consists of sites that link to other sites for the sole purpose of increasing their link popularity score.
Links are fine - even encouraged - if they are related to your topic, but link farms rarely provide useful content to visitors.
Links that are included in page content and contain the page's keywords are more valuable than links exiled to a site's "Related Links" page.

It is absolutely essential to put clear blue water between your web directory and a link farm, the thinness of the line that separates a web directory from a link farm is quite amazing.
In the past years, some high profile web directory was considered a link farm by top search engines.
Most web directory script lacks ways of checking the integrity of links in the directory database, find a way to test the links in your web directory database to ensure the sites are still online, remove sites that have gone offline promptly as linking to a dead link will bring your directory rating down.

Contextual, on-topic links from quality hubs and authority sites are the best (most value), while a directory include cross linking all your own (or clients) sites to one another (whether on topic or not) is of little value.
Understand, you are in control who you link to at all times, this is not an automated system in that sense, if it were it would be useless as far as I'm concerned because the search engines would be all over it...
And it works, only days after recieving our first link requests, reviewing their sites, accepting them and providing the links, we found ourselves with several good quality back links, that we were not directly recipricating with, and that were right on topic.

Researchers Discover Direct Link Between Agricultural Runoff And Massive Algal Blooms In The Sea
Scientists have found the first direct evidence linking large-scale coastal farming to massive blooms of marine algae that are potentially harmful to ocean life and fisheries.
Scientists have long suspected that many harmful blooms are fueled by fertilizer runoff from farming operations, which in many regions pour tons of excess nitrogen and other nutrients into rivers that eventually flow into coastal waters.
However, some agricultural industry groups contend that there is not enough evidence to link farm runoff to red tides or dead zones.

A directory... not a link farm! - SEO Chat
The problem is that I've heard that often, a directory is being confused (by search engines) with a link farm.
One of the biggest factor in getting dubbed a link farm is the number of links per page.
Basically linking to banned or penalyzed sites is a definate no-no and will keep you from getting good rankings in the SERPs.

"Link Farm" Defintions are Vague... - SEO Chat
Over the last few months I've heard some very different defintions of what "link farming" is. Everything from: when a large group of sites just co-link amongst themselves (everyone linking to everyone else), to when huge numbers of links are added in bulk- links that especially have no real relevance to your site.
Today I read a site disclaimer somewhere that suggested that linking to other sites in a "resources" section is akin to link farming and makes you a target for a G ban.
The other examples you give have other SEO issues, but they are not link farms.

One nice feature is that it divides the links by grade level: 1 - 6 grade; middle and high school; and college and beyond.

How to avoid linking to a link farm
Basically a link farms is a hodgepodge of non-related sites all linking together with the sole purpose of trying to obtain as many possible links as possible.
However, the link farm is a completely worthless method of driving Web traffic to your site as this method of link exchange actually dilutes the relevance of your page for your chosen keywords.
In order for a link exchange to drive traffic to your site and to help you in Google, the web site you trade links with must be related in some way to your site.
