Topic: Link protocol

  NetWare Link-Services Protocol (NLSP)
The NetWare Link-Services Protocol (NLSP) is a link-state routing protocol from Novell designed to overcome some of the limitations associated with the IPX Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and its companion protocol, the Service Advertisement Protocol (SAP).
To maintain a WAN link, the router maintains a state variable indicating whether the link is up, down, or initializing for each adjacency.
If the router does not hear from a neighbor within the time specified in a holding timer, the router generates a message indicating that the link is down and deletes the adjacency.

This is considered as a neighbor loss if the link described by the expired tuple was the last link with a neighbor node (on the contrary, a link with an interface may break while a link with another interface of the neighbor node remains without being observed as a neighborhood change).
If link layer information describing connectivity to neighboring nodes is available (i.e., loss of connectivity such as through absence of a link layer acknowledgment), this information is used in addition to the information from the HELLO-messages to maintain the neighbor information base and the MPR selector set.
Once a link is detected as lost, it is advertised, in accordance with the provisions described in the previous sections of this specification.

 LMP Layer Tutorial
The Link Manager Protocol essentially consists of a number of PDU (protocol Data Units), which are sent from one device to another, determined by the AM_ADDR in the packet header.
If the link key is derived from combination keys and the current link is the semi-permanent link key, the link key can be changed.
If the link key is a unit key, the units must go through the pairing procedure in order to change the link key.

RFC 1307 (rfc1307) - Dynamically Switched Link Control Protocol
Normally circuit switched network links are disconnected, and their prohibitive cost suggests that it is very costly to leave them connected at all times.
Link control is a function of the network layer, initiated by requests from the transport provider.
For example, if the transport provider requests a link be setup for a new transport user while another transport user has the link active, the DSLCP may inform the transport provider that the link is ready without delay, provided that the link can support multiple transport connections.

Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet Chapter 6 -- 5.8: PPP: The Point-to-Point Protocol
The PPP protocol data-link layer sender must be able to take a network-level packet and encapsulate it within the PPP data-link layer frame such that the receiver will be able to identify the start and end of both the data link frame and the network-layer packet within the frame.
PPP must be able to detect a failure at the link level (for example, the inability to transfer data from the sending side of the link to the receiving side of the link) and signal this error condition to the network layer.
The protocol field tells the PPP receiver the upper-layer protocol to which the received encapsulated data (that is, the contents of the PPP frame's info field) belongs.

The HTTP Protocol As Implemented In W3
This is a subset of the full HTTP protocol, and is known as HTTP 0.9.
This restricted protocol is very simple and may always be used when you do not need the capabilities of the full protocol which is backwards compatible.
The interpretation of the protocol below in the case of a sequenced packet service (such as DECnet(TM) or ISO TP4) is that that the request should be one TPDU, but the response may be many.

The protocol establishes formats for these messages, and describes procedures for determining when each type of message should be transmitted and what it means when one is received.
The setup layer protocol is associated with the establishment, modification, and deletion of streams and groups.
Link initialization should be carried out when a machine is initially powered up, when it does a system restart, when the ON state (see below) times out, when a loopback condition times out (see Section 9), or whenever the link transitions from non-operational to operational status.

Simpson [Page 21] RFC 1661 Point-to-Point Protocol July 1994 Typically, this action MAY be used by the LCP to advance to the Link Dead phase, or MAY be used by a NCP to indicate to the LCP that the link may terminate when there are no other NCPs open.
As previously mentioned, the Protocol field uses an extension mechanism consistent with the ISO 3309 extension mechanism for the Address field; the Least Significant Bit (LSB) of each octet is used to indicate extension of the Protocol field.

HDLC - High Level Data Link Control   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The HDLC protocol is defined by ISO for use on both point-to-point and multipoint (multidrop) data links.
SNRM and SABM frames, for example, are used both to set up logical link between the primary and the secondary station and to inform the secondary station of the mode of operation to be used.
Prior to any kind of transmission (either between two stations connected by a point to point link or between a primary and secondary station a multidrop link) a logical connection between the two communication parties must be established.

A Preliminary Specification Of A Data Link Protocol
A protocol is specified by the services it provides and the messages that are exchanged by the two entities that implement the protocol.
The main state of a link is given by two variables, one that keeps track of the sequence number of the next outgoing data frame, and the second the keeps track of the expected sequence number of the next incoming data frame.
The semantic (protocol behaviour) is specified by describing the resulting behaviour given a service request, the occurrence of a time out event, and the arrival of a frame.

IP   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The IP (Internet Protocol) is a protocol which uses datagrams to communicate over a packet-switched network.
The IP protocol operates at the network layer protocol of the OSI reference model and is a part of a suite of protocols originally developed by the US Department of Defense (DoD).
In a LAN environment, the protocol is normally carried by Ethernet, but for long distance links, a data link protocol such as HDLC is usually used.

 NOVELL: Novell's Networking Primer
By converting protocols or using multiple protocols at different layers of the OSI model, it becomes possible for different computer systems to share data, even if they use different software applications, operating systems, and data-encoding techniques.
The function of the logical link control sublayer is to ensure the reliability of the physical connection.
This protocol is typically used to connect two computers through a serial interface, such as when connecting a personal computer to a server through a phone line or a T1 or T3 line.

When the LLC protocol is used, the MAC layer SDU (the payload data) is further encapsulated, adding two additional headers.

 Silent Carriers by BadreL
Usually, we won't have a lot of information about which operating system runs that link, or what kind of machine are we in, since in nearly all cases, what your preferred wardialer screen displays is insufficient to determine it.
Before this link protocol was available, SLIP ("Serial Line Internet Protocol") was used to establish connections, but nowadays it's hardly used (although it is still used by some connections that we all know ;)).
Also the authentication protocol doesn't need to be only one (it must have an order determined by the administrator that configured the carrier).

Link control frames are for the control and sequencing of connections between peer LM-MUX processes.
While the link has been taken over for "exclusive mode," all other connections are considered to be unable to use the link connection.
While the IrLAP protocol incorporates the basic mechanisms for station discovery and link connection management, LM-MUX must include a separate state machine to track the behavior of the link protocol.
