Golf swing conditioner - Patent 6913543
It is comprised of a mechanical linkage, with at least six free-moving joints, so that it effectively simulates a wide variety of golf swings without the need for complex adjustments and provides for smooth and even distribution of resistance to the various muscle groups involved in the swinging motion.
Finally, the mechanical linkage of the GSC is characterized by movement planes that allow for resistance to be smoothly and evenly distributed to muscle groups throughout the swinging motion, so that all sports-specific muscles may be trained appropriately.
Most often, the mechanical linkage 25 is suspended from a vertical frame 20, with the mechanical linkage 25 rotatably attached to the frame 20 near the top of the frame 20 and hanging down towards, but not contacting, the floor (or the base platform 24).

A planar mechanism is one in which all particles describe plane curves is space and all of the planes are co-planar..
The mechanical advantage of a linkage is the ratio of the output torque exerted by the driven link to the required input torque at the driver link.

Manual Transmission: Clutch Linkage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A mechanical clutch linkage usually consists of the clutch pedal, a series of linkage rods and arms, or a cable.
Hydraulic linkages have become increasingly popular because they give the manufacturer the flexibility to increase force at the clutch fork, with fewer space constraints compared to mechanical linkages.
Whether the linkage is mechanical or hydraulic, the linkage should have some sort of adjustment for clutch play (a certain amount of slack in the clutch linkage).

Mechanical interaction between overlapping segments is the vital step in fault growth by segment linkage.
Mechanical interactions between overlapping segments is manifest in asymmetric along-strike profiles of fault displacement.
In the absence of mechanical interactions (i.e., during radial propagation), maximum displacement ideally occurs at the midpoint of an isolated fault segment and decreases to zero at the end points.

For those using mechanical linkage, the throwout lever must be adapted to the bell housing mounted on a ¾" spacer.

A steering linkage for short wheelbase vehicles: Design and evaluation in a wheelchair power base - A technical note
The challenge in designing a mechanical four-wheel steering mechanism is to design a device with the ability to turn each wheel through 180° while minimizing Ackerman errors (misalignment of the wheels).
The force applied to the sliding member of the linkage was determined as a function of the torque on each wheel for operating points throughout the full range of motion.
The curve in the figure estimates the sum of linear force required on the sliding member of the linkage per unit torque on the wheels (the sum required to turn all four wheels) as a function of the angle of the inside wheel relative to the straight ahead null position.

Mechanical Linkages had its time of fame through the mid 19th century.
With the rapid growth of industry there was a great interest in the theoretical aspects of the movement machines, the result was the study of Mechanical Linkages which are abstractions of real world machines consisting only of Joints, Anchors and Rigid Bars.
This mechanical linkage turned to be of little use in reality due to its complicated nature and the development of oil lubricants which made simpler machines, which could only approximate linear motion more feasible.

Adjusting and Servicing Clutch Linkages, Larry Carley, Brake & Front End, November 2000
This type of linkage usually has an adjustment nut on one of the rods that must be adjusted periodically to compensate for clutch wear.
Many cable linkages are designed to operate with zero pedal free play, and hold the release bearing in light contact with the clutch fingers or levers.
A hydraulic linkage reduces pedal effort, makes it easier to connect the clutch pedal to the clutch in a tight engine compartment, and eliminates the need for bulky return springs and troublesome cable adjustment mechanisms.

Method and apparatus for design and optimization for simulation of motion of mechanical linkages - Patent 5297057
In a dynamic simulation of a mechanism, mass and interia terms allow the simulation to stay on a single branch of the solution space (there are multiple solutions to both the dynamic and kinematic equations).
By picking a particular path through a mechanism's envisionment, the geometric constraints are used to restrict the possible values of the link lengths to the set of values that satisfy the conjunction of the constraints associated with each state in the envisionment.
When the compiler is first set running, the only labels on the linkage are those marking the position and orientation of the ground link, together with those marking the fact that the input parameters are known (that is, that their exact values will be known when the assembly procedure is first set running).

If you set the mechanical linkage correctly, then everything is orthogonal from the servo to the throttle barrel when the throttle is at the 50% position (see section on orthogonal linkages above).
Now make sure that all the mechanical stuff is orthogonal when the servo is at its null position (throttle stick at mid position with a linear throttle curve from 0% to 100 % and no "something" to throttle mixing and the trim in mid position).

Cycle Resolved, In-Cylinder Friction Measurement Technique Development   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The key to this technique is the ability to measure the force transmitted to the connecting rod which requires precision installation of strain gauges and a means to power (since strain gauges are passive transducers) and acquire the signal from the strain gauges.
In the past a mechanical linkage (typically called a grasshopper linkage) was used to support and protect power and signal wires that ran from the bottom end of the connecting rod, into a modified oil pan, and out the engine.
There are several draw backs to this technique including speed limitations and dynamic considerations for the linkage, wire fatigue failure, and the necessity of engine modifications which may change engine characteristics.

Three-Degree-of-Freedom Parallel Mechanical Linkage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A unique parallel mechanism or interface couples three-degree-of-freedom translational displacements at an endpoint such as a handle, a hand grip, a robot tool, etc., to link rotations around three axes that are fixed with respect to a common base or ground link.
The mechanism provides a new overall spatial linkage composed of a minimal number of rigid links and rotary joints that are arranged in three closed chain loops of six binary (two-joint) and four ternary (three-joint) links.
Consequently it is useful in applications requiring full back drivability, and can serve as the mechanical linkage for actively powered devices such as compliant robotic manipulators and force-reflecting hand controllers, and passive devices such as manual input devices for computers and other systems.

Three degree of freedom parallel mechanical linkage (US5816105)
A three degree of freedom parallel mechanism or linkage that couples three degree of freedom translational displacements at an endpoint, such as a handle, a hand grip, or a robot tool, to link rotations about three axes that are fixed with respect to a common base or ground link.
The mechanism includes a three degree of freedom spherical linkage formed of two closed loops, and a planar linkage connected to the endpoint.
Thus, this invention can serve as the mechanical linkage for actively powered devices such as compliant robotic manipulators and force-reflecting hand controllers, and passive devices such as manual input devices for computers and other systems.

In addition, this mechanical linkage does not need to carry or move the weight and inertia of any of its actuators.
The linkage does not require any other mechanical transmission elements such as belts, cables, gears, or screw drives and their consequent undesirable friction, backlash and compliance.
Because all of its motors can be mounted to a common base plate or ground, the linkage's inertia and moving weight are reduced, thereby increasing the amount of controllable force and power available for useful work at the device's end-effector.

Instead of setting up the plane with max surface travel initially, it seems like the smart thing to do is setup for moderate travel and slowly increase the travel until you have enough travel for your desired mode of flight.
