LinkedIn isn’t taking away a precious feature, they’re fixing a public performance metric that encouraged behavior that, on average (not in every case), is detrimental to the overall “health” of the network and conflicts with their positioning and primary value proposition to their primary target market.
I don’t know if this is what Linkedin expected, but I believe that many users who would have been quite content at 200 or so connections, will now feel a certain pressure to jump to the other group.

LinkedIn, has more than 3.2 million professionals have joined the LinkedIn network, highly popular social networks, most able to create a viable business around services for career professionals and has an online membership directory for over 800 membership organizations or conference organizers, Guericke said.
The standard version of LinkedIn is free, but with the release of a series of paid premium services this year, the company expects to reach profitability in the first quarter of 2006.

I am not able to view anyone's profile, from auguest 5th linkedin has made a lot of changes to its site and put a lot of features, restrictions, this could be the one of the reason.
LinkedIn said it could take 3-4 weeks so I am hoping to hear back by the end of the year at the latest.
I'm relatively new to LinkedIn, but look forward to testing it and seeing what it can do, would any of you share success stories with me? I'm a younger guy looking to gain entry level positions on the track to management.

More seriously, I was looking for bloggers amongst the LinkedIn crowd, and stumbled on the limitations of its search engine, which, for example, is incapable of dealing with plurals.
The webloggers are using LinkedIn to be, "linked in", like *tribe* and *friendster* but the crowd is looking for professional/work contacts and people are using it like a social sphere -- which is why you think the keywords are not being utilised effectively.
The professional nature of LinkedIn is obvious, but people may tend to use it differently, as you hint.

The essential by-product of this, other than a higher position in search results and a fitter profile, is that I get to meet new people in the process, which is why I do all of this relationship stuff anyway.
I believe that the fact that two people who are in LinkedIn and both want to connect to each other, provides enough social context to provide a "weak tie", one sufficient enough to produce effective multiplication of network effectivenss, a la Granovetter.
The very purpose of LinkedIn is to manage the "extension" of your network through a chain of weak ties.

But, as you say, LinkedIn can be a bit intimidating for new folk, so I'd be happy to take you on a brief tour of how I use it to make new connections online.
LinkedIn recently changed its system to make it easier for you to connect with people with whom you don't have a direct two or three hop relationship, which is quite beneficial when you've just joined the system and only have a handful of connections.
Now here's where it gets interesting, because LinkedIn is based on the premise that "hopping" from connection to connection is the best way to network, so my results are actually going to be different to yours since I have a different network of formally connected people on LinkedIn.
