Links (golf) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A links golf course, sometimes referred to as a seaside links is the oldest style of golf course, first developed in Scotland, where golf originated.
It is believed that the term "links" comes from the fact that the land used for golf originally was the land near the sea that was not good for farming.
Links courses tend to be on, or at least very near to, a coast, and the term is typically associated with coastal courses.

ESPN.com - GOLF - Strege: Big Mac is back
McGwire is the latest offspring of baseball's golf lineage that began with (and ends with, the cynic could argue) former Yankees outfielder Sam Byrd, who won six PGA Tour events in the '40s and was runner-up to Byron Nelson in the 1945 PGA Championship, setting a standard that might be insurmountable.
Golf is not so accommodating it will allow an opportunity to erase so large a deficit with a single swing.
Moreover, he has played enough golf with tour players to know that, unlike Jordan, he would sound foolish were he boldly to declare his intention to play the PGA or Champions tours.

GolfDigest.com - Not Every Golf Course is a Links   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The next three majors are on links, considered by some to be unattractive, by others as unpredictable, and by even the best players in the world as unrelenting in their demands.
For our purposes, a links is any course -- by an ocean or not -- built on well-drained, sandy soil that offers firm and fast fairways and greens, has uneven ground, an infinite variety of stances and lies, very few trees, punishing rough of native grasses and deep, recessed bunkers.
Links golf is also an attitude, of patience and perseverance in the face of bad bounces and hideous lies.
