Anarchie.de - [LPA] (en) salzburg long (fwd)
the linkswende (trotz group from vienna) tried to instrumentalise the meetings for pushing their own ideas, including the suggestion that the no border no nation caravan should lead an attack against the summit perimeter on sunday.
linkswende wanted theory, because they already had prepared speeches on this and they wanted to recite them, anarchists and others wanted praxis.
linkswende however, went demonstrating outside of the fence and a part of the fence was taken down and falted at this time, as parts of the scattered anarchists went to join them.

Anti-WEF-protests in Salzburg Once again police repression...
Then there was an escalation when the anarchists and "Linkswende" made an attempt to smash through the police lines.
The spontaneous character of the demonstration (which corresponds to the political ideas of the anarchists and the "Linkswende" who want to show everybody the ugly face of the state apparatus, but without taking into account the real balance of forces) made it very easy for them to "justify" their repression of the demonstration.
The "Linkswende" is the best example of how a group with, supposedly, "trotskyist" traditions can end up in the blind alley of "semi-anarchism".

The police put up the barriers again, the demonstration reunited, chains were formed.
When members of the Linkswende (the Austrian Section of the International Socialists) argued that demonstrators should sit down, we contested the proposal, because this would have been fatal should the police have attacked.
Soon the demonstration went towards the next gate leading on the Heldenplatz.

That is why we regard it as quite tragic that the ISO Steering Committee failed to mobilize for Seattle, when it is clear that activists from all over the United States did so.
Last Saturday our tiny young Austrian sister group Linkswende, with some 40 members, produced 500 placards for the huge anti-Haider demonstration in Vienna, and was very prominent in the media coverage.
We were shocked that, by contrast, the ISO, a far larger and stronger organization, does not figure in the Seattle video.

Voice of the Turtle - Comrade of the Printer
Threatened by the rise of Haider, the social democrats have implemented tougher anti-immigration laws, sending out a clear signal that Haider's party is correct, and foreigners are to blame.
In the absence of the socialists, opposition to Haider has come from smaller groups, the Greens (well-represented in the Austrian parliament), the Communists, the Young Socialists and the small socialist party Linkswende (whose members are currently fighting off a libel case from the Freedom Party).
Finally, what does Haider's vote tell us about the prospects for the far right acrosss Europe?
