The Linnéan Society of London is the world's oldest organization devoted to the study and promotion of natural history, specifically the biological sciences of botany and zoology, with all their subdivisions and in all their aspects.
The bicentennial of the Society is a notable event for all the world's professional biologists and amateur natural historians, many of whom are members or fellows of the Society.
The Linnéan Society provided British biologists with their main forum of communication until 1826, when the Zoological Society of London was founded, an event that set the precedent for the formation of other specialized biological societies.

And whilst we remain proud of our heritage, today more than ever the Society is an important contemporary organisation encouraging debate, research, publications, meetings as well as maintaining internationally important historical collections in the biological sciences.
This, coupled with the recognition of the importance of systematic biology research to biodiversity conservation, means that as it moves into its third century, the Linnean Society continues to play a central role as the urgency and magnitude of the task of documenting the world’s flora and fauna is recognised.
Our library, for example, is composed of some 40,000 monographs dating from 1483 to the present, focusing on plant and animal identification and classification, evolutionary biology and the history of natural history.

The Society's holdings are, therefore, an exceptional resource for researchers both in taxonomy and the history of science and are curated to the highest standards for inspection by scholars and natural historians.
At present, the "public" with which the Society communicates may be considered in four categories: school students; those non-professional biologists in the UK with serious interests in aspects of natural history; certain organizations in other countries; the global community of workers in biology and its associated professions.
The Linnean Society, with its central location and Meeting Room, Council Room, Committee Rooms and Library, is able to encourage and support both amateur and professional taxonomists, whose expertise benefits the furtherance of our knowledge of biodiversity and sustainable use of our natural resources in both education and research.

About the Linnean Society of NSW
The affairs of the Society are administered by a Council of 18 members, six of whom retire each year but are eligible for re-election.
Successful establishment of the Society was due in large part to the dedication and financial support of its first President, Sir William Macleay (1820-1891).
Originally, the Society occupied various offices around the city of Sydney including the Garden Palace, where it fell victim to the disastrous fire of 1882.

The Council of the Linnean Society of NSW is keen to increase this form of direct financial support to the scientific community - to professionals, students and amateur researchers alike.
The Linnean Society seeks donations from individuals, institutions or organisations sympathetic to the purposes for which the fund is currently being used.
After consideration of various options, the TEEMS council decided that donation of the accumulated capital to the Linnean Society of NSW to establish "The Betty Mayne Scientific Research Fund", the purpose of which is to assist students of the earth sciences, would be a fitting memorial to perpetuate the memory of their fellow geologist.
