  LINOCUT
Matisse was fascinated by its ease in working and used it in the simplest terms possible, creating a series of engravings of pure white lines on a fl ground.
Picasso too used linoleum to do a number of coloured linocuts between 1958 and 1964.
The evolution of linocuts is particularly interesting; it was developed in Poland after the second world war, where Grabowski and Starczewski analysed the structural elements of its graphic language, while Gielniak and Fijalkowski exploited it to evoke surreal and sometimes metaphysical atmospheres.

Linocut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linocut is a variant of woodcut, in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface.
A pattern is carved into the linoleum, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reflection of the design to be printed.
Due to ease of use, linocut is widely used at schools to introduce children to the art of printing.

 Printmaking Techniques
The Japanese, traditional masters of the woodcut, must be acknowleged as important forerunners of much of the work done by westerners thoroughout the 20th century.
The linocut is a printmaking technique similar to that of the woodcut, the difference being that the image is engraved on linoleum instead of wood.
This is the printmaking technique invented by Senefelder in Germany in 1796 which takes advantage of the repulsion between oil and water to transfer an image from a smooth limestone surface to a sheet of paper.

CMA Exhibition Feature : Wood Engraving and Linocut
Like woodcut, wood engraving and linocut are relief techniques-that is, the image is printed from the raised portions of a carved block.
Pablo Picasso first made linocuts in 1951 but found it tedious to cut a separate block for each color.
Picasso's innovation was to use a single block of linoleum to print all of the colors, cutting out more of the design from the block for each color.
