Linux Terminal Server Project | Linux Journal
There is an open-source project that could make a huge difference in Latin America: the Linux Terminal Server Project or LTSP (http://www.ltsp.org/).
Red Hat 6.2 (http://www.redhat.com/) was the distribution of choice for the server because it had been fully tested, and it's easy to configure and maintain.
That the K12 Project is aimed mainly at schools and children is proof of the great advancement and significance of the LTSP.

LWN: A look at the Linux Terminal Server Project
Since the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) came away with the Best of Show award at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo (LWCE) last week, we thought this would be a good time to take a look at the project and its status.
LTSP originated out of a project that began in 1996, to provide a solution for Binson's Hospital Supplies (BHS) that would allow access to an AS/400 for legacy applications and Unix for new applications from a single computer or terminal on each desktop.
Basically, LTSP is a distribution of Linux that sits on the server and is loaded by a thin client over a network using Etherboot or the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE).

LWN: The future of the Linux Terminal Server Project (Linux.com)
So it's more like a system for doing X terminals were your using a existing Linux distro to do the X clients (the applications) portions and to serve as a PXE (or etherboot or whatnot) boot strap server to launch a mini linux system for running the diskless X terminals.
I used LTSP on a project a couple of years ago, and even used it on a couple of client machine on the local net for a while, so I have a reasonable idea of how it works.
The LTSP package installs (or did then) a complete root environment for the clients to mount as well as config files you could tweak from which the client-machine config files were generated dynamically at boot-time.

Introducing the Linux Terminal Server Project
This project was born out of the need to solve a problem for a customer who needed a terminal that could communicate with both an IBM AS/400 and a Unix application server.
In most cases, the bootp server, tftp server, nfs server and xdm server will all be the same machine, we will refer to that simply as the 'Server', and we will refer to the diskless workstation as the 'Workstation'.
There are several HOWTO's that explain how to setup a server for diskless booting of a single workstation, but they don't discuss the problems involved in serving many workstations from a single server.

Montreal Linux Users Group - The Voice - The Linux Terminal Server Project for Schools   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
LTSP allows a network of low-cost, diskless workstations to connect to a Linux server.
Many schools would be able to install LTSP for the cost of a modest server, say an Athlon 850mhz with 512mb of RAM, a cheap monitor and video card (these last two aren't even needed), for less than $1,000.
LTSP provides a simple means for schools to make Linux workstations available to their students without incurring significant costs.

Starting with version 4.1, LTSP has a package of utilities for installing and managing the LTSP client packages (The stuff that is executed on the thin clients), and for configuring the services on the LTSP server.
Assuming that the server and workstation are configured properly, it should just be a matter of inserting the boot floppy in the floppy drive and turning on the workstation.
That is, the client application runs on the server, using the servers' CPU and memory, while it displays its output on the workstation and uses the workstations' keyboard and mouse.

LTSP has been around since 1999, when Jim McQuillan and Ron Colcernian decided to solve a customer need at a home health care supply company.
LTSP allows you to run Linux on a server, and then use thin clients (almost any computer will do) to connect to the server and receive a full-blown Linux desktop.
LTSP project leader McQuillan, and LTSP hacker Scott Balneaves, recognized the need for a unified codebase and chose to dump the old way of doing things, and come up with one codebase for all LTSP variants.

Right now, LTSP traffic over the local network is not encrypted for services like NFS, and McQuillan says he wants to provide the option of encryption for all services in the next release.
Right now, LTSP is available as part of the Ubuntu distribution, and McQuillan says that the project is working with the Fedora project to include LTSP as well.

This work has resulted in the Linux Terminal Server Project, (www.ltsp.org), a series of tools and procedures for turning aging PC's into fully functional Linux workstations, simply by booting a single floppy, frequently without altering the existing software on the client machine.
