Linux User Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Linux User Group (LUG) is a private, generally non-profit or not-for-profit organization that provides support and/or education for Linux users, particularly for inexperienced users.
LUGs are still primarily focused on hobbyist users and professionals who are engaged in self-directed study.
Some Linux users are dissatisfied with their local LUG for reasons that might include its size, insularity or atmosphere: the online group LinuxChix, which is a worldwide LUG and social group for women Linux users, was founded due to the perceived aggression and rudeness prevalent in other Linux forums.

Recipe for a Successful Linux User Group
This is especially true of people accustomed to traditional user groups, which generally must charge dues to finance their dead-tree-media newsletters and other money-intensive operations.
There are also offsetting disadvantages: Established PC user groups are often in decline, and tend to be run by people devoted to legacy proprietary OSes who have no understanding of Linux or open-source software.
Old-line PC user groups tend to have annual dues of US $40 and up, for all members, and often charge admission for their monthly meetings.

 Linux User Group HOWTO
New Linux users already in contact with a LUG are ahead of others whose interest in Linux has been piqued by a computer journalist, but who have no one to whom to turn for aid in their quest to install, run, and learn Linux.
LUG activists should be prepared to intercede before the ingrate newcomer is handed her head on a platter, and politely suggest that her needs would be better served by paid (consultant-based) services.
In general, LUG members are especially delighted to help, on a volunteer basis, members who seem likely to participate in the Linux "gift culture" by picking up its body of lore and, in turn, perpetuating it by teaching others in their turn.

 Linux User Group HOWTO
To give just one indication of the ways in which a LUG is different than a traditional user group, I call the reader's attention to a curious fact: traditional user groups have had to maintain a fairly tight control over the kinds of software that its users copy and trade at its meetings.
New Linux users who are already in contact with a local LUG are ahead of those whose interest in Linux has been piqued by a computer journalist, but who have no one to whom to turn to aid them in their quest to install, run, and learn Linux.
Linux education is the key to this dynamic: education turns new Linux users into experienced ones.
