Lion Air, which competes with nine other low-fare carriers in Southeast Asia, is taking advantage of an expanding economy and an Indonesian government's edict to limit overseas budget carriers from flying in four major cities.
Lion Air has focused on the region's growing number of first-time travelers since it began flying in June 2000, it said.
Lion Air was expected to decide on as many as 60 Boeing 737s or Airbus SAS A320s planes as a replacement for its fleet of MD- 80 aircraft, Joseph Nadol, an analyst at J.P. Morgan Securities Inc., wrote in a May 23 report.

Lion Air, the country's second-largest carrier behind state-run Garuda Indonesia, announced last year that it was leasing Jakarta's regional Halim Perdanakusma airport and would expand its routes across Asia.
Nevertheless, Haysim said Lion Air expects its passenger traffic to grow by as much as 30 percent this year, and it plans to begin serving routes to India, Australia, China, Japan and Hong Kong.

Lion Air, a low-cost Indonesian airline that hopes to expand operations in Southeast Asia, will sign a preliminary agreement with Boeing in Washington, D.C., for up to 60 of its 737s, according to people familiar with the deal.
The deal with Lion Air, while an important order for Boeing, also brings the company closer to development of another model of its next generation 737 family.
Boeing and Lion Air must still work out the mix of planes the airline will take, but Lion Air hopes to be the launch customer for the yet-to-be-built 737-900X, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Lion Air President Director Rusdi Kirana said the deal to buy a combination of Boeing's 737-800 and 737-900 narrow-body airliners would modernize his fleet and save fuel.
"Lion Air has operated not more than five years, but we have bought up to 60 aircraft, which means we have great potential because we have 230 million people and we are an archipelago country," Kirana said at the signing ceremony in Washington.
Lion's current fleet has 38 aircraft, around half of which are leased, Alhabsi said.

I had hoped it was to minimize the time a customer must spend in a Lion Air sales office, first to book a ticket, then pay for the ticket, then to use the city check-in service to get a good seat.
If you book a ticket on Lion Air's web site, the Samarinda Lion Air ticket office refuses to accept payment even though it clearly states on the web site that a customer can pay for their ticket at any Lion Air sales office.
Lion Air is either misrepresenting its service on the Internet, not communicating with its regional sales offices or has no control of its regional sales offices.
