Trinidadian Lionel Belasco's sweetly swinging, piano, along with his cosmopolitan combo of cuatro, bass and the jaunty West Indian violin of Cyril Monrose (plus occasional flute or clarinet) defined the accompaniment and instrumental interludes of the music of Trinidad for decades.
Belasco began recording before the classic age of calypso.
Belasco is rarely out front, but his piano forms the backbone of the rhythm.

Lionel "Lanky" Belasco, who died in 1967, was our first West Indian musical genius.
Apart from his seminal influence in opening up the melodic, rhythmic and instrumental possibilities available to calypso, however, Belasco was simply a good composer whose tunes sometimes possess startling beauty and elegance.
Thus he is aptly compared, on the new CD Goodnight Ladies and Gents: the creole music of Lionel Belasco, to the great Afro-American ragtime composer Scott Joplin.

Turns out the real find for me was Lionel Belasco, a pianist and bandleader who was born in Barbados in about 1882 (Rounder lets you listen to the tracks on “Goodnight Ladies and Gents” in Windows Media or Real Audio).
Belasco started working professionally when he was still in school — the earliest recording on the album dates from 1914.
Apparently Belasco ran a piano shop in Harlem and his son remembers musicians — including Waller — stopping by on their way to gigs to play for a while and warm up.
