Daily Egyptian: 04/09/97: LETTER: Letter shows dangers of bigotry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Professor Emeritus M. Lionel Bender, ironically of the Foreign Languages and Literature Department, thought it fitting to condemn Saleem Rasheed's March 25 guest column as extremist (in his March 31 letter to the editor).
Bender then gave a patronizing dismissal of the "Church of the Creator" promoted on this campus by Matt Hale.
Bender states that his "guess is that (the Church of the Creator) got a lot of hate mail and little or no supporting mail." Instead, Islam is to be understood as the real threat, according to Bender, whose letter contains the stereotypical "terrorism" cliches.

Lionel Bender and his 'slam putting' proved that the 'touch' players perhaps need to think again.
Bender avoided the obstacle for a safe four and the title was his.
This was a welcome win for Bender who in previous competitions had succumbed to last round nerves, securing his second BMGA Tour victory (his first since 1999).

Nilo-Saharan languages - Psychology Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
According to Joseph Greenberg (The Languages of Africa) as initially modified by Lionel Bender (and adopted by the Ethnologue), they are classified into the following branches:
Proposals for the external relationships of Nilo-Saharan typically center on Niger-Congo: Gregersen (1972) grouped the two together to form Kongo-Saharan, whereas Blench (1995) actually proposed that Niger-Congo may simply be a member of Nilo-Saharan (coordinate with Central Sudanic.) However, such theories are treated with reserve by most historical linguists.
Lionel Bender classifies them as follows, slightly modifying his 1989 classification:

Exerts From "Amharic Verb Morphology: A Generative Approach"
This exert is from the text "Amharic Verb Morphology: A Generative Approach" by Lionel Bender and Hailu Fulass.
The introduction covers the origins and development of the Ethio-Semitic languages in what was probably the best theory arrived at at the time of publication (1978), and may still be the best so far.

Lionel Bender //-->Lionel Bender) has often been suggested, particularly Ethiopia, because it includes the majority of the diversity of the Afro-Asiatic language family and has very diverse groups in close geographic proximity, often considered a telltale sign for a linguistic geographic origin.
Lionel Bender //-->Lionel Bender (1997) advocates a "Macro-Cushitic" consisting of Berber, Cushitic, and Semitic, while regarding Chadic and Omotic as the most remote from the other branches.
Olga Stolbova //-->Olga Stolbova (1995) group Berber with Semitic, Chadic with Egyptian, and split Cushitic into five or more independent subfamilies of Afro-Asiatic, seeing it as a Sprachbund rather than a valid subfamily.
