Lionel Martin was a keen sporting cyclist and motorist, and by the end of 1914 the first prototype sports car was being developed using experience gained from tuning and modifying Singers and an old Isotta Fraschini, which was used as a mobile test bed for a newly designed engine.
Lionel Martin's wife, Kate, had the idea that a name for the new car beginning with the letter 'A' would mean that it would feature at the top of the list of runners in the programme at competitions, and it was hoped that this would assist with promoting the new car.
The name Aston Martin was decided, being partly derived from Aston Hill, a hillclimb venue close to Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire.

Named after founder Lionel Martin and a famous piece of English real estate called Aston Hill, Aston Martin had a rather uncertain beginning in 1914.
In fact, it would be difficult to refer to Aston Martin as an automaker at all until the early 1920s, by which time Martin had lost controlling interest and been demoted to technical engineer by his investors.
Under Bertelli’s stewardship Aston Martin rose to prominence in motor racing by the early 1930s, recording a first in the 1931 Brooklands JCC Double-Twelve, a second in the 1931 Tourist Trophy, and a fifth at Le Mans in 1931, 1932, and 1933.
