Apparently Newman was also a bit of a joker, and used to call Jerry Goldsmith "Gorgeous", because of the composer's fastidiousness about his hair and appearance (Newman even placed a pan of water on the podium one day so Goldsmith could admire himself).
It has always been pretty obvious that Lionel's main claim to fame was to have been born the brother of Alfred; the latter a Hollywood genius and legend, rightly lauded constantly as such; the former an adequate song and score writer/conductor, and apparent all-round OK studio man to have around.
