Lionel Ngakane (July 17, 1920 - November 26, 2003) was a South African filmmaker.
Ngakane was educated at Fort Hare University College and Wits University, and worked on Drum and Zonk magazines from 1948 to 1950.
In 1950 he began his career in film as an assistant director and actor in the film version of Cry, the Beloved Country, directed by Zoltan Korda.

Ngakane ('Uncle Lionel' to those who knew him) spent most of his adult life in exile, but when he returned to South Africa he played a key role in ensuring that the ANC government recognised the importance of film in its policies.

Lionel Ngakane, who died on November 26 at the age of 83, was born in Pretoria in 1920 and educated at the Fort Hare University College and the University of the Witwatersrand.
Ngakane was never credited for his function behind the camera as a location and casting scout, but is known for playing the role of Absalom alongside Sidney Poitier in that work.
Later Ngakane directed a number of documentaries about apartheid and African development and was present at the inaugural conference of the Pan-African federation of Filmmakers (Fepaci) in Tunis in 1967.
