Lionel Richie spent much of the '90s relatively quiet, and when he attempted a comeback toward the end of the decade, it didn't make many waves.
Lionel Richie, barring his success in the '80s with such hits as "Hello," "Running With the Night," and "All Night Long," has struggled to find his place in music after life with the Commodores.
Lionel Richie wasn't necessarily emboldened by the success of Can't Slow Down -- after all, he had experienced huge success since the Commodores -- but there is nevertheless a sense of swagger on its 1986 successor, Dancing on the Ceiling.

Richie eventually enrolled in Tuskegee Institute; his initial goal was to become an Episcopal priest.
In 1982 Richie decided to leave the Commodores to pursue a solo career, though his decision was not due to conflicts within the group.
Richie believes his success as a songwriter comes from God, whom he told Johnson was his "co-composer." He explained further: "I give credit to my co-writer because all I did was write down what He told me to write down." Richie also revealed to Johnson that he prefers to collaborate during the night.

Richie is, after all, one of the world's most recognized and rewarded performers.
Richie believes that a hit song is one that is rendered with great craft and conveys simple ideas that are heartfelt, and resonate with listeners of any age, race, creed or nationality.
Richie began stepping outside the Commodores in 1980, after Kenny Rogers' hit version of "Lady" led to him producing the singer's 1981 album "Share Your Love." "Endless Love," his 1981 chart-topping duet with Diana Ross (covered in 1994 by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey), was Motown's most successful single and further fueled Richie's solo ambitions.

 Lionel Richie
One of the most stubborn barnacles to have attached itself to the hull of the big, dumb 80s pop music ocean liner, Lionel Richie spent the early part of his life on the campus of Alabama's Tuskegee Institute, where his grandfather had established the family a generation earlier.
The son of a school principal and an Army systems analyst, Richie's initial career plan was to become an Episcopal priest; when the time came for him to attend the Institute himself, however, this plan was altered in favor of a major in Economics and a minor in Accounting.
By the arrival of the 1980s, Richie had expanded his activities beyond the confines of the Commodores, writing and producing the sappy (and enormously successful) ballad Lady for pop-turned-country-turned-pop crooner Kenny Rogers.

To call Lionel Richie an underrated artist ten years ago would have brought vilification, but time has a way of bringing perspective, and time has generally been a friend to the solo work that Lionel Richie has released over the past twenty years.
However, as popular as that album was (and it was scary-popular), it had the hint of contrivance, as if designed precisely for what the "target" audiences wanted to hear.
Over the course of Lionel Richie's solo career, the mixed feelings that various fans and critics have expressed have resulted in large part from Richie's consistent eagerness to please large numbers of fans with his music, even to the dismay of Soul and Funk purists.

Richie grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute, where he formed a succession of R&B groups in the mid-60s.
The Commodores became established as America's most popular soul group of the 70s, and Richie was responsible for writing and singing many of their biggest hits, specializing in romantic, easy-listening ballads such as "Easy", "Three Times A Lady" and "Still".
His debut, Lionel Richie, produced another chart-topping single, "Truly", which continued the style of his ballads with the Commodores.

Richie took but what he needed from the group's signature sound: two lush, dramatic ballads, "Truly" and "You Mean More To Me," slick, drum-programmed RandB like "Tell Me" (background vocals by tennis star Jimmy Connors) and the pretty "You Are," a touch of country-soul with "My Love," Rogers on background vocals.
Lionel Richie was proving himself too well in the Commodores, and when he hit it big with his duet with Diana Ross, he and Motown knew that it was time to move on.
Lionel Richie has never been an innovator, but what he does, he does extremely well.

Lionel Richie is forever enshrined in the popular imagination for his ballads, but his first solo album is more wide-ranging than that.
Although LIONEL RICHIE came out several months prior to THRILLER, that album is a very close comparison sonically; slick pop-R&B grooves like "Serves You Right" and "Tell Me" have a similar mix of Top 40 smarts and soulful heart.
The 2003 reissue of LIONEL RICHIE includes two bonus tracks, an extraneous instrumental version of "You Are" (the flipside to its 12" single) and a surprisingly effective solo demo of "Endless Love" that is nearly as good as the duet smash with Diana Ross.
