By the Pueblo revolt of 1680, the Lipan were established by their modern cultural identity as a separate tribe who rode horses: this was the beginning of the "Plains Indians".
The Lipan Apaches arrived in the Texas Panhandle (Llano Estacado) and the Edwards Plateau by 1680, pushing Caddoan and Algonkian tribes eastward.
When the Lipan were exiled to the reservations and sedentary life, they had to be taught how to grow gardens and crops, because they had always relied on foraging for food.

Transferring to Guadalcanal 6 December, Lipan was redesignated ATF-85 (fleet ocean tug) on 13 April and operated in the Solomons during the first half of 1944.
After overhaul Lipan departed for Okinawa 24 February dropped fuel barges at Pearl Harbor and Guam, and arrived 1 May. Three days later, as the Japanese intensified the suicide attacks in a costly but futile campaign to hold Okinawa, the tug undertook salvage and firefighting duties.
While Lipan was en route 30 September a typhoon with 50-foot seas and winds over 100 knots battered the tug with 55° rolls, snapping the tow, and starting a fire which destroyed the propulsion panel and the lower motor room.

In the book there is a lithograph of a Lipan Apache warrior at their campsite called Lipan Crossing, on the Rio Grande River about 85 miles above the mouth of the Pecos River.

Hello to all the old crew of the USS Lipan, I am Donald Fitzgeralds daughter he was skipper from 1955-57 involved in Operation Redwing.
I was also a 'deck ape' on the lipan 1985-1987 and remember ballyhoo bob's booze cruise (I think) I also recall using the 'boots' to calibrate the radar.
I was a QM3 on the Lipan from 81-83.
