Spindle-cell liposarcoma is a rare variant of an atypical lipomatous tumor (ie, well-differentiated liposarcoma), and it must be distinguished from a dedifferentiated liposarcoma with metastatic potential and a benign spindle-cell lipoma.
Myxoid and/or round-cell liposarcomas and pleomorphic liposarcomas have a striking predilection for the limbs, and dedifferentiated liposarcoma occurs predominantly in the retroperitoneum.
Liposarcomas of all subtypes can occur in the cutis and the subcutis; however, their primary occurrence in the skin is rare.

LIPOSARCOMA OF THE THORACIC WALL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In the differential diagnosis of the differentiated liposarcoma from a lipoma the contribution of MRI with the administration of contrast media is important: in the first case an important reinforcement of the signal is noticed which implies the increased abundance of cells and vessels in the tumor.
The mucous liposarcoma has a multiple imaging in MRI which depends on the quantity of fatty and mucous material, the abundance of cells and vessels and the presence of necroses.
It might pretend to be a benign cystic tumor, and for this reason the administration of contrast media is important for the outline of areas with reinforcement of the signal which represents the increased vascularization and the cell abundance, while areas which are not reinforced correspond to accumulated mucous material, necroses and decreased vascularization.

The liposarcoma demonstrates considerable microscopic variability and the biological behavior of the tumor is greatly dependent on the exact histopathologic appearance.
(Figure 4) represents half of all liposarcomas and is composed of variably mature multivacuolar and univacuolar lipoblasts, often with numerous signet-ring types scattered throughout a myxomucinous stroma with a sparse or sometimes abundant fibrillar network (Figure 4).

 Liposarcoma - Children's Hospital Boston
Liposarcoma is a malignant soft tissue tumor (cancer that originates in soft connective tissues of the body) that develops in fat tissue.
Liposarcoma rarely arises from lipoma, a benign tumor of fatty tissue.
Because liposarcoma affects tissue that is elastic and easily moved, a tumor may exist for a long time before being discovered, growing large and pushing aside surrounding tissue.

Liposarcoma occurs in the deep soft tissue of extremities and in the retroperitoneum.
Although myxoid liposarcoma is a subtype of liposarcoma, it may be difficult to establish the correct diagnosis with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging due to the lack of fat signal intensity.
Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is a mixed histologic subtype defined by the association of an atypical lipomatous tumor or well-differentiated liposarcoma and a nonlipogenic sarcoma.

In this differential diagnosis, the age of the patient is of greatest importance, as myxoid liposarcomas are exceedingly rare under the age of 10 years.
Well-differentiated liposarcoma accounts for 40 to 45% of all liposarcomas and the lipoma-like form is by far the most common of its variants.
Dedifferentiated liposarcoma occurs in late adult life, with a predilection for the retroperitoneum, followed by deep soft tissues of the extremities and the spermatic cord.

PRIMARY PLEURAL LIPOSARCOMA:15(2)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Liposarcomas are among the most common mesenchymal tumors occurring in adults.1 They occur mostly in the soft tissues of the lower extremities, retroperitoneum, peritoneum and shoulder region.
Primary intrathoracic liposarcomas are, however, very uncommon; Razzak et al.2 in 1971 published 44 such cases, of which 43 originated in the mediastinum and one in the pulmonary hilum.
Liposarcomas account for 10% to 12% of soft tissue tumors in adults.1 These tumors are rare in children and only 17 cases in the pediatric age group have been reported.10 Liposarcomas in adults arising from the pleural surfaces are extremely rare.

Liposarcomas get their name because they appear to develop from fat cells in the soft tissues of the body.
Occasionally a liposarcoma is too large or stuck down to make an operation possible, but the surgeon feels that it might become operable if it could reduced in size.
If, as often happens, the liposarcoma is in a part of the body where surgery is impossible or dangerous then radiotherapy is used and often combined with chemotherapy.

There is a slight male predominance in liposarcoma of approximately 60-40, and the mean age is in the 50s.
Atypical lipoma and well-differentiated liposarcoma are histologically similar; however, the clinical behavior of the tumors and the ultimate outcome of the patients appears to be different depending on the lesion's location.

Background: Liposarcoma is one of the least frequent soft tissue sarcomas occurring in childhood; it comprises less than 5% of all soft tissue sarcomas.
Well-differentiated liposarcomas are composed of a heterogeneous organization of univacuolate adult lipocytes, chronic inflammatory cells, and fibrous connective tissue.
While liposarcoma is an extremely rare lesion, particularly in the pediatric population, it is important to consider liposarcoma in the differential diagnosis of lipoma.

According to the current World Health Organization classification,1 well-differentiated liposarcoma (atypical lipomatous tumor) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma are 2 separate entities in the same histogenetic category; they share many clinical, morphologic, and cytogenetic features.
The term dedifferentiated liposarcoma was first introduced by Evans.2 Dedifferentiated liposarcoma occurs most frequently in central body sites, especially the retroperitoneum.1-6 Tumors from this area usually carry the worst prognosis.
Away from these nonlipogenic sarcomatous components there was a small area of well-differentiated liposarcoma composed of mature fat with many atypical stromal cells and a few typical lipoblasts (Figure 2, C and D).
