So is Liposarcus pardalis but since it is not in most fish atlas', I did not know that I did not have a Hypostomus until an expert saw the above photo.
From what I have gathered, there are three commonly found species of Liposarcus which may have gone by the genus Pterygophlichthys in the past or even now.
Liposarcus pardalis = one of the "common" plecos or the leopard sailfin pleco, this is the one I now think I have although the Baensch photo shows orange-tipped fins which Plecy does not have, grows over 40 cm.

Common Pleco - Iridis Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The nocturnal fish is extremely popular in the aquarium hobby for its ability to clean tanks of algae.
There are a number of species that are sold on the market under the name Common Pleco, including Hypostomus plecostomus, Hypostomus punctatus, Liposarcus multiradiatus, and Liposarcus pardalis.
The fish are commonly sold when they are 2 - 3 in (5 - 8 cm) and while there is some variety among the species, the Common Pleco will grow to an adult size in excess of 8 - 12 in (20 - 30 cm), sometimes in less than a year.

The armoured catfish, Liposarcus pardalis, a teleost from the Amazon, tolerates large fluctuations in water oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions and may be routinely exposed to bouts of environmental hypercapnia in the natural environment.
Materials and Methods Liposarcus pardalis, (308 ± 15.5g) were obtained from a commercial fish supplier and held at the National Institute for Research of the Amazon (INPA), Manaus, Brazil, for at least 2 weeks prior to experimentation.
The magnitude of the extracellular acidosis tolerated by L. pardalis, and the ability to regulate pHi in the face of an extracellular acidosis are the greatest reported for a teleost fish.

pardalis is said to have flatter dorsal profile, larger eye, and the head with the spots forming a reticulate patern.

Abstract: Amazonian armoured catfishes exhibit substantial cardiac hypoxia tolerance, but little is known concerning organismal cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and behavioural responses to low oxygen levels.
This study assessed the general mechanisms used by two species of armoured catfish, Glyptoperichthyes gibbceps and Liposarcus pardalis, to survive the frequent periods of hypoxia encountered in the Amazon River.

RETURN TO Pterygoplichthys was considered by Weber (1991, 1992) to consist of three genera, Pterygoplichthys, Liposarcus, and Glyptoperichthys; however, Armbruster (1997; submitted) could find no characteristics to uniquely diagnose all three genera and recognizes only Pterygoplichthys.
