  River Dolphins
Most of them live in some of the world's largest and most complex river systems: the Amazon, the Indus and Ganges, and the Yangtze.
Being very easily frightened and usually impossible to approach by boat, Baiji has not been an easy dolphin to study and is thus little known.
The family Pontoporiidae has also been suggested, since fossiles from the late Miocene and Pliocene have been discovered that are intermediate between the Pontoporia and the Lipotes.

Spring 2005 meeting abstracts, Geology and Geography, Georgia Southern University
To resolve delphinidan phylogeny, we gathered new morphological and molecular data and concatenated it with published data sets to create a matrix of 65 taxa (of which 40 are extinct) scored for 328 morphological characters, 25 transposon characters, and 945 informative nucleotide characters distributed across 7.4 kilobases.
As in several previous studies, we found a monophyletic Delphinoidea, a sister-group relationship between Monodontidae and Phocoenidae, and Inia and Pontoporia to be sister-groups.
The extinct delphinidan Parapontoporia grouped with the Yangtze River dolphin, Lipotes, to form Lipotidae, which we found to be the most basal delphinidan clade.

Conservation International - Goodbye to the Baiji? Not If These Scientists Can Help It
Despite China’s substantial conservation efforts, the baiji population has continued to fall as the health of the Yangtze basin has declined.
This loss of the world’s most threatened cetacean would mean the extinction of an entire family of mammals (Lipotidae).
The blame lies with harmful human activities, including pollution, dam construction, blasting of new shipping channels, intensive riverside development, and unsustainable fishing techniques that deplete the eels on which the baiji feed.

They found that the baiji had a stomach that was different than that of all four species; it contained no fore-stomach, and had no connecting tube between the main and pyloric stomachs.
Because of this evidence, the baiji was placed in it's own family, Lipotidae.
Even though there are many unique differences, the baiji still has a lot in common with other dolphins.

And it deserved a better recognition of its plight by the young woman in the background, apparently some sort of "helper," than her silly grin.
It would not surprise me if many cetologists, including August Pfluger, would prefer to erect a separate family for the Baiji, *Lipotidae, at least on account of the great distance between the Shanghai and the Rio de la Plata.
In that case, the extinction of the Baiji does indeed mean the formal end of a family.

Other human activities, such as shipping, development and pollution also have contributed to the population decline.
Extinction of the Baiji would mean not only the loss of a species, but of an entire family of mammals (Lipotidae).
The critical status of the Baiji, and the deteriorating status of the finless porpoise, signify that one of our planet’s great aquatic ecosystems, the Yangtze river basin, is in immediate peril due to the nearby presence of about 10 percent of the Earth’s human population.
