  EZGeography - Insectivora
Other evidence now indicates that even Erinaceidae (hedgehogs) and Solenodontidae+Nesophontidae should also be placed in separate orders.
Traditionally, the golden moles of southern Africa and the tenrecs of Madagascar and Africa were grouped with the hedgehogs, shrews and moles in the Lipotyphla.
However there have always been minority opinions suggesting that Tenrecomorpha, or at least the golden moles, are not true Lipotyphlans.

Molecular evidence additionally indicates that golden moles and tenrecs should be separated as a new order AfrosoricidaThe order Afrosoricida (also known as Tenrecomorpha) contains two families of small mammals that are probably a part of the order Insectivora.
Lipotyphla is a diphyletic taxon comprised of two monophyletic groups, Afrosoricida and Eulipotyphla.
Lipotyphla is the correct name of an order containing classic insectivores; hedgehogs, true shrews, moles and so on.

IngentaConnect Extrinsic Snout Musculature in Afrotheria and Lipotyphla   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Although most mammalogists have accepted this taxon, the morphological support for Lipotyphla is relatively weak, and recent phylogenetic studies using molecular data have concluded that it is not monophyletic.
Instead, these molecular studies place chrysochlorids and tenrecids in the proposed clade Afrotheria, together with aardvarks, elephants, elephant shrews, hyraxes, and sirenians.
The snout is moved by different muscles in different afrotherian taxa, suggesting that the mobile snout is not homologous across different afrotherian lineages.
