Lipscani - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lipscani is a street and a district of Bucharest, Romania, which in the Middle Ages was the most important commercial center of Bucharest and the whole Wallachia.
It was named after Leipzig (Lipsca in 17th century Romanian), as that was the origin of many of the wares that could be found on the main street.
The word lipscan (singular of lipscani) came to mean trader who brought his wares from Western Europe.

 Bucharest - LoveToKnow 1911
Bucharest is often called " The Paris of the East," partly from a supposed social resemblance, partly from the number of its boulevards and avenues.
The Lipscani was originally the street of merchants who obtained their wares from the annual fair at Leipzig; for almost all crafts or gilds, other than the bakers and tavern-keepers, were long confined to separate quarters; and the old names have survived, as in the musicians', furriers', and money-changers' quarters.
Continuous with the Calea Victories, on the north, is the Kisilev Park, traversed by the Chausee, a favourite drive, leading to the pretty Baneasa race-course, where spring and autumn meetings are held.

Tutuianu Marinica-Daniel The Lipscani area The Lipscani area is a lively part of old Bucharest which polarized various trades between the 15th-18th centuries.
It was partially restored after 1990, especially in the Banks area, but most of the old houses and narrow sloping streets still wait for some Prince Charming investor who may return to them their formerly life and glamour.
Once the political and economic power concentrated in the area of the Princely Court, around 1600, a lot of guilds and shops came into being, and that is why the area would be populated with goldsmiths, hatters, shoemakers, tanners, furriers, saddlemakers, grocers a.o.

 Lipscani May 2005
Residents and business owners of Lipscani who had watched their small narrow streets become snarled with traffic had long been lobbying the city to ban cars from the area.
Without any prior consultation with residents or business owners, as it stands now the only vehicles that can enter Lipscani and the 57 streets that surround it are fire engines, ambulances and police cars, and cars run by secret police.
That will allow them to come and go as they please, and to restore Lipscani to the pride of place in Bucharest that it so richly deserves.

The Cafe Culture program aims to revive the Lipscani area in terms of youth cultural events in an attempt to reform the concept of literary cafes.
The events encompassed in the program that will take place from July 1-16 have little in common with the traditional gatherings meant to initiate debates of classic literary works, as most of the artists come from the underground sphere.
Many of the happenings will take place in prominent locations in Lipscani, such as the Amsterdam Cafe, Monaco Lounge and Club A, in addition to venues frequented by young people.
