Temperature stabilizer for liquid crystal displays (LCD) - Patent 6700638
A liquid crystal display (LCD) is positioned with respect to electronic circuit components within a device so as to direct at least a part of thermal energy generated by and radiated from the electrical circuit components to the liquid crystal display.
The LCD temperature stabilizer as defined in claim 13, wherein said electromagnetic shielding enclosure further comprises an electromagnetic shielding enclosure of the type used in a cellular telephone to prevent spurious signals from being radiated from an RF component in the cellular telephone circuitry.
The LCD temperature stabilizer as defined in claim 12, further comprising means for positioning the LCD in a spaced relation to a surface of said thermally conductive guide member, whereby at least a portion of said thermal energy dissipated by said electrical circuit component is directed to the LCD.

How do liquid crystal displays (LCDs) work?
In liquid crystal displays (LCDs), use is made of linear polarisers, familiar to most as the glass in polarising sunglasses.
One (or both, I'm not sure) of the layers is made of liquid crystals which have the ability to change the direction of their polarization when a voltage is applied to them.
That is the response of liquid crystal molecules to applied voltages.

 Liquid Crystal Displays Materials
As light propagates through the liquid crystal cell, it is broken up into two modes which are generally elliptically polarized with the major axis of the polarization ellipse parallel to the nematic director (See Basics of LCD Operation).
Liquid crystals are long chain organic molecules that sometime exhibit the properties of a liquid, yet have the long range ordering of a solid.
Liquid crystals differ in that the value of most of its physical parameter are dependent on the direction along which they are measured relative to the molecule itself.

 Howstuffworks "How LCDs Work"
We think of a crystal as a solid material like quartz, usually as hard as rock, and a liquid is obviously different.
This means that liquid crystals are neither a solid nor a liquid.
This explains why liquid crystals are very sensitive to temperature and why they are used to make thermometers and mood rings.

Transistor applies voltage to liquid crystals, that sets their spatial alignment.
Light changes its polarization angle when it passes through the ordered liquid crystal molecular structure, and depending on its new polarization angle it will be absorbed completely or partially.
The purpose of this design is to enable liquid crystals to move in opposite direction to their neighbors.

Liquid crystal display - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Each pixel consists of a layer of liquid crystal molecules suspended between two transparent electrodes, and two polarizing filters, the axes of polarity of which are perpendicular to each other.
When an electrical charge is applied to the electrodes, the molecules of the liquid crystal are pulled parallel to the electric field, thus reducing the rotation of the entering light.
Older LCDs had longer response time than their plasma and CRT counterparts, creating ghosting when images rapidly change; this drawback, however, is continually improving as the technology progresses and is almost imperceptible in current LCD Computer Displays and TVs.

 LCD
Liquid crystals were observed as long ago as the 1850s, during experiments on human nerve fibres, where they were found in myelin - the nerve system's natural insulation system.
In a normal liquid, molecules are randomly arranged; but the molecules of a warmed liquid crystal retain some of their original orderliness - just enough order for the liquid crystal to retain the optical properties of a solid.
The phospholipids at this pressure retain enough liquid crystal structure at the ambient temperature to provide a strong cell membrane capable of withstanding the strain. But when the bacterium is brought to the surface, the pressure drop changes the critical temperature at which the liquid crystal cell walls can maintain their structure.

Active-matrix liquid crystal display - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) is a type of flat panel display, currently the overwhelming choice of notebook computer manufacturers, due to light weight, very good image quality, wide color gamut, and response time.
The term was first used in 1975 by Dr T. Peter Brody to describe a method of switching individual elements of a flat panel display, using a CdSe TFT for each pixel.
Whereas a passive matrix display uses a simple conductive grid to deliver current to the liquid crystals in the target area, an active matrix display uses a grid of transistors and capacitors (which are called the thin film transistors) with the ability to hold a charge for a limited period of time.

 Liquid Crystal Displays
LCD designers want this ratio to be as large as possible in order to obtain ``fler fls'' and ``whiter whites.'' Typical LCDs have contrast ratios between 10 and 40.
In this display, the liquid crystal molecules lie parallel to the glass plates, and the glass is specially treated so that the director of the crystal is forced to point a particular direction near one of the plates and perpendicular to that direction near the other plate.
Assuming the liquid crystal responds to voltages over one frame period, we can calculate the average voltage felt by a pixel that is on and a pixel that is off.

 Home-ideas.org: LCD TV
LCD TV Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) are a form of monitor consisting of a thin fluid of crystalline molecules backlit by a light source.
LCD displays operate by means of liquid crystal molecules placed between two transparent panels, one of which is coated with a special polymer that allows the fluid to bond to it.
LCD televisions tend to be flatter and lighter than their competitors, and this renders them more convenient to wall-mount and nove about the home.

 Liquid Crystal Displays
A nematic liquid crystal is filled between two glass plates, which are separated by thin spacers, coated with transparent electrodes and orientation layers inside.
As a result, the liquid crystal molecules are fixed with their alignment more or less parallel to the plates, pointing along the rubbing direction, which include an angle of 90 deg between the upper and the lower plate.
Since the electro-optically active part of the display is reduced by the TFTs to typically between 30 and 60 %, additional masks are required to block light leaking through the non-active parts and hence to improve the contrast of the display.
