Direct democracy was first experimented with in the ancient Athenian democracy of ancient Greece, which was governed for two centuries by a council of randomly selected representatives and a general assembly of all citizens.
Modern mass-suffrage democracies generally rely on representatives elected by citizens (that is, representative democracy).
Interestingly, direct democracy models in practice usually focus on the adversarial process of advocating and choosing one of usually two broad or sweeping options defined for the citizens by experts.

Liquid democracy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liquid democracy is a form of direct democracy with proxy representation allowed.
In a direct democracy, if there is a meeting or vote taken, every member has the right to attend or vote.
Thus, in delegable proxy democracy, if A names B, who names C,..., and A and B do not attend or vote, the vote of C is augmented by the votes of A and B.

The word democracy originates from the Greek "demos" meaning "the people" and "kratein" meaning "to rule" or "the people to rule" which meant literally: "Rule by the People." The term is also sometimes used as a measurement of how much influence a people has over their government, as in how much democracy exists.
One important issue in a democracy is the limitations on rights to candidate and on suffrage or franchise - that is the decision as to who ought to be entitled to vote.
Proponents of democracy argue that just as there is a special constitutional process for constitutional changes, there could be a distinction between legislation which would be handled through direct democracy and the modification of constitutional rights which would have a more deliberative procedure there attached, and thereby less vulnerable to the tyranny of the majority.

 Encyclopedia: Representative democracy
Representative democracy comprises a form of democracy and theory of civics wherein voters choose (in free, secret, multi-party elections) representatives to act in their interests, but not as their proxies—i.e., not necessarily according to their voters' wishes, but with enough authority to exercise initiative in the face of changing circumstances.
Representative democracy came into particular general favour in post-industrial revolution nation states where large numbers of subjects or (more recently) citizens evinced interest in politics, but where technology and population figures remained unsuited to direct democracy.
Indeed, many (perhaps most) absolute monarchies were overthrown by the advocates of representative democracy, either in a revolution or through a gradual process of reform that saw the monarch lose most of his/her powers.

Liquid Truth: Advice from the Spinmeisters - SourceWatch
What is more important than their actual effectiveness is the seemingly authoritative justification that they provide for the PR worldview--a belief that people are fundamentally irrational and that therefore a class of behind-the-scenes manipulators is necessary to shape opinion for the public's own good.
But this belief is at odds not only with the ideals of democracy but also with the fundamental and necessary ideological underpinnings of the scientific method itself.
Before scientists can reach any conclusions whatsoever about the elements in the periodic table or the space-time continuum, they have to first believe that "the truth is out there" and that their investigations will take them closer to it.

One of the obvious applications of the kind of direct/proxy democracy represented by my initiative and the Swedish one, is for user groups.
A user group that was organized according to these concepts would, in fact, represent the users, it would be not only a way for users to express what they want, coherently and without bias from the hyperactive special interests who often dominate such organizations, without requiring more effort than people were willing to invest.
I may not have put all this in the charter, but a proxy is charged with the task of being a communication link between the organization and all the members who have entrusted him or her.

 Liquid Democracy for Decision-making
If members choose to proxy their votes on decisions for which they are not experts, the effect is that the votes by members with expert knowledge with carry a heavier weight, which would lead to more-informed decisions.
The proxies would certainly be more fickle than representative positions in modern democracies, but I still don't see anything to prevent cartel voting, considering that direct democracy is simply too burdensome for most people.
My own observations from communal living and worker-coops is that "liquid" decision making is just a proxy, or microcosm, of the "system", only a lot more jibber-jabber, to quote Mr.

A post from Joi Ito's wiki-wiki emergent democracy page, which is itself very interesting.
One way to look at LiquidDemocracy is as representative democracy, but much more fine-grained; you don't have to elect just one guy to represent you on every issue, you can have different specialists for different issues.
Second, there is no GerryMandering (at least, not in the process of choosing representatives); your single vote empowers your chosen representative a little bit; you don't have to get more than 50% of the people in your area to vote for the same guy before there is any effect.
