Definition of Liquid cooling for computers
The components in a computer liquid cooling system consist of one or more “water blocks”, a pump, a radiator, one or more fans, tubing, cooling liquid, and may also include a reservoir and fittings.
The water block is attached to the computer’s CPU (or other component to be cooled) and is used to transfer heat to the cooling liquid.
A reservoir may be used to hold additional cooling liquid (as loss does occur even in a “closed” system), and to provide additional thermal mass to even out temperature fluctuations.

Computer cooling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is similar to passive heatsink cooling, except that a fan is attached to the heatsink, usually forcing air down onto it, to increase the amount of air coming in contact with the heatsink.
In computers, the heatsink on the CPU is attached to a larger radiator heatsink.
Extra cooling is usually required by people who run parts of their computer (such as the CPU and graphics card) faster than manufacturer specifications, called overclocking.

Tiny bubbles are key to liquid-cooled system for future computers
Moreover, decreasing the diameter of the microchannels increased the cooling efficiency of the system by causing the liquid to form even smaller bubbles, which is contrary to the expected result.
As liquid flows through the channels, it is heated by the chip and begins to boil, producing bubbles of vapor.
Cooling with this pumpless loop is fundamentally different from, and far superior to, pool boiling themosyphons because of the former's ability to separate the path of replenishment liquid from that of the released vapor.

Electronics Cooling: direct liquid immersion cooling for high power density microelectronics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Although air cooling continues to be the most widely used method for cooling electronic packages, it has long been recognized that significantly higher heat fluxes can be accommodated through the use of liquid cooling.
Indirect liquid cooling is one in which the liquid does not contact the microelectronic chips, nor the substrate upon which the chips are mounted.
Direct liquid cooling, the focus of this article, may also be termed direct liquid immersion cooling, since there are no physical walls separating the microelectronic chips and the surface of the substrate from the liquid coolant.

Liquid cooling of computers is currently something reserved for “hardcore” users or supercomputing.
The cooling block is generally a hollow block of conductive metal with connections for piping, although some also consist of a hollow plastic container with a metal attachment.
Liquid cooling is usually about 10 times more efficient at cooling a given computer system than a standard fan setup.

'Nano-lightning' could be harnessed to cool future computers
Future cooling devices based on the design will have an "ion-generation region," where electrons are released, and a "pumping region," made up of another set of electrodes needed to create the cooling effect.
If the method can be perfected, it will introduce a major new cooling technology for laptop and desktop computers that is quiet, low-cost and reliable, said Fisher, whose work focuses on fabrication of the carbon-nanotube and diamond-film electrodes, as well as testing the device's ion-generation region.
Liquid cooling, on the other hand, would be expensive and prone to breakdown.

AppleInsider | PowerBook G5 to use Liquid Cooling?
Liquid cooling essentially functions as a radiator for the CPU inside of a computer.
As the liquid passes through the heat sink, heat from the hot processor is transfered to the cooler liquid.
The warmed liquid is then cycled to a radiator on the side or rear of the casing where it is released into the ambient air outside of the unit.
