 The Rapido River
General Alphonse Juin, commander of the French Corps, lobbied heavily to attack through the mountains, saying that it would out flank the Germans and that they would be forced to withdraw from their positions in the Liri Valley.
The US Fifth Army, which consisted of the US II Corps and the French Expeditionary Corps, attacked across the Rapido River and the Gustav Line South of the Liri River while the British Eighth Army was attacking the Gustav Line North of the Liri River.
After much discussion they were allowed to do so.
