Liriodendron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liriodendron is a genus in the magnolia family (Magnoliaceae) consisting of two species of large deciduous trees, one native to eastern North America, the other to China.
The standard English name is variously given as two words (tulip tree, the most common form in popular usage), hyphenated (tulip-tree), or compound (tuliptree, the most common form in botanical usage).
It is known widely as fossils in Europe and well outside its natural range in Asia and North America, showing a once circumpolar distribution.

 Liriodendron
Liriodendron is in the Magnoliaceae family with the magnolias based on flower similarities.
The common names of the North American species, "yellow-popular" or "tulip-poplar", are hyphenated because Liriodendron is not a true popular, which would be in the genus Populus (as you know).
The bole of yellow-poplar is strait as an arrow, with smooth gray bark with young to middle aged.

Liriodendron, a member of the family Magnoliaceae, has only two extant species: Liriodendron tulipifera L. of eastern North America and Liriodendron chinense (Hemsl.) Sarg., native to mainland China.
Using L. tulipifera and L. chinense, their fertile hybrids and a single generation of backcross progeny, the development of a complete genetic map is in progress.
These maps will be useful in the breeding of Liriodendron as well as playing a role in examining the evolution of the genus.

However, if you have the headroom, you can choose the more narrow-growing cultivar of this deciduous species, 'Fastigiatum.' It may reach 60 feet high and 20 feet wide after many years, but after 10 years it is only 25 by 8.

A restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) would accelerate selection and breeding of Liriodendron by reducing the number of generations needed to manipulate small genetic regions and by allowing quantitative trait loci to be monitored.
Using L. tulipifera and L. chinense, their hybrids and a single generation of backcross progeny, I propose to develop a genetic linkage map containing over 150 markers.
