Plant Pathology Research Report   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
THE PATHOGEN - Leaf and crown rot of Liriope is incited by the fungus-like organism, Phytophthora palmivora.
Inoculation of healthy Liriope plants with zoospores of P. palmivora produced in pure culture consistently resulted in the infection of roots, the crown area, and leaves and eventually, typical, leaf and crown rot damage.
For example, the specific importance or extent of sporangia dispersal in Liriope leaf and crown rot has not yet been fully documented, but sporangia function similarly in many Phytophthora diseases where dispersal has been studied, so they would be expected to serve the same purpose in Liriope leaf and crown rot.

Nearly everyone agrees that "ornamental grasses" includes a group of closely related monocots: the true grasses (members of the grass family, Poaceae), the sedges (members of the sedge family, Cyperaceae), the rushes and woodrushes (members of the rush family, Juncaceae), cat-tails (members of the cat-tail family, Typhaceae), and restios (members of the Restionaceae).
Sometimes the definition of ornamental grasses is expanded to include an eclectic mix of plants with linear leaves, such as daylilies or liriope, but I've never subscribed to this approach since it has no reasonable limits.
TP: You say that the appeal of ornamental grasses is quite distinct from that of most garden perennials.
