Gladiator (Soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard
Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard combine their talents in producing a unique score that hints of the familiar spanning several genres and ages of music.
Lisa Gerrard’s contributions to this score lay along the lines of the more mellow, melancholy, or even magicale as found in The Wheat, Sorrow, Reunion, Elysium.
Lisa Gerrard performance is decidedly more upbeat and hopeful as accompanying guitars, percussions and additional vocals make this a more "celebratory" version of the memorable song.

Gerrard's "Now We Are Free" cue, which has molded itself into somewhat of a song because of the film's popularity, receives much attention.
Gladiator: (Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard) Hans Zimmer's collaboration with Lisa Gerrard is notable for the expansion of the texture of the music which, in Zimmer's case, is normally considerably more simplified.

Gladiator (Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard) soundtrack review
With soft strings and wordless female voice, Gerrard creates music that serves as an excellent contrast to Zimmer's synths and orchestra.
As is the four last cues, "Am I Not Merciful?".
"Elysium", "Honor Him" and "Now We are Free", with both the wordless vocals by Gerrard and Zimmer's lyrical and memorable themes these cues serve as a great ending to a score that unfortunately wasn't what I expected it to be, both when it comes to quality and style.

Gerrard's participation, in particular was a very pleasant addition, because it adds an ethereal element which is necessary for such concepts as Elysium (the Afterlife) and Freedom.
Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard work together (composed by and arranged by these two) in this soundtrack to bring a myriad of heart-pumping brass and percussion and ethereal ancient (or old-style) sounding music.
I was most impressed with the four scores (The Wheat, Sorrow, Reunion and Elysium) written and sung by Gerrard, which sets the mood for the movie from the very beginning to the final scene.

In Music We Trust - Lisa Gerrard: Whale Rider original soundtrack
In all likelihood, Lisa Gerrard has never swam along with a pod of whales, listening to their "songs." However, one wouldn't know that after listening to her soundtrack for the film Whale Rider.
Gerrard, who gained universal acclaim and an adoring cult following as the fairer half of Dead Can Dance for two decades, has since released her own, more lofty albums and done a considerable amount of work for films.
Fans of Gerrard's otherworldly, spiritual singing will likely be disappointed with Whale Rider, considering there is very little singing going on, but those who can appreciate her subtle soundscapes will likely find this ethereal body of work to hold lasting charms.

Lisa Gerrard's performances grate on me. I don't care how technically well she can sing, there doesn't seem to be a feeling human being attached to that voice except in terms of pretentiousness and taking herself far too seriously.
Lisa is perfectly competent by herself, though, and her compositions are marvelous.

The extraordinary mosaic of musical influences is perhaps less surprising in the light of Lisa’s childhood in Melbourne, where she recalls Greek, Turkish and Irish melodies “oozing into the streets” of her neighbourhood.
Lisa received Golden Globe nominations for Insider and Ali, Grammy and Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe award for the score of Gladiator and four international awards for Whale Rider.
With Lisa singing in both ancient Gaelic and Aramaic - and sometimes without words at all - it’s a timeless record that takes the listener on a memorable journey as the ten tracks trace a cycle of life and death and rebirth that touches on the mystery of existence itself.

Lisa Gerrard: Immortal Memory [with Patrick Cassidy]: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: )
As Gerrard and Brendan Perry became more accomplished over time and more deeply immersed themselves in the possibilities of ancient music, they left behind any semblance of "rock." Eventually, film soundtracks seemed a logical next step.
Gerrard has scored some good ones since the duo split in 1998 (The Insider comes immediately to mind), in addition to continuing with her solo and collaborative work.
Of course, the power of Immortal Memory ultimately comes from Gerrard's voice, and here, she is like five great singers rolled into one, shaping her tone and elocution to fit seamlessly with the mood and style of each individual piece.
