What all the men on the Lisbon Maru shared was the misfortune to be trapped in Hong Kong when the Japanese launched their Pacific campaign of conquest with the simultaneous attack on Pearl Harbour and Hong Kong on December 7, 1941.

My father George Wilkinson was on board the Lisbon Maru Sadly he died in 1989 but before he died he wote his life story and gave an account of the sinking of the Lisbon Maru.
Reg confirmed this, as they lost everything on board the Lisbon Maru the Japanese fitted them out with white socks which had a sole and were shaped like a mitten, they had one toe and the rest of the toes were together.
He went on the Lisbon Maru and was on the voyage when it was torpedoed.

Enoura Maru and Brazil Maru -- On December 27, 1944 the POWs that survived the attacks on the Oryoku Maru were loaded into the cargo holds of two ships - the Enoura Maru and the Brazil Maru - for the voyage to Takao, Formosa where they arrived on December 31, 1944.
The Shinyo Maru left Zamboanga in convoy on September 7, 1944; however, the USS Paddle was waiting near Sindangan Point, Mindanao where it torpedoed the Shinyo Maru late on the same day.
The Ebara Maru was outfitted as a tanker; however, it was identical in appearance to the Enoura Maru except for the pipes on the deck.

The Enoura Maru took a direct hit by a U.S. Navy bomber, killing over half of the 500 POWs; the survivors were put aboard the Brazil Maru and they arrived in Moji, Japan on January 29, 1945.
Lisbon Maru, torpedoed by USS Grouper in October 1944, went down with another 846 POWs, the only bright memory being an unarmed rush by men of the Middlesex Regiment, who overran and killed several Japanese sentries assigned to keep the prisoners cooped up in the holds of the sinking ship.

If not for the sinking of the Lisbon Maru, a Japanese prisoner ship, Jordan's life would never have intersected with the Dongji Islands and those fishermen on these tiny islands in east China's Zhejiang Province.
Except for three soldiers who managed to escape by hiding in a cave, Jordan and the other rescued soldiers were recaptured by the Japanese and taken back to Japan and were not freed until the war ended in 1945.
All this was made possible because of the bravery and kindness of the people of the Zhoushan Islands who rescued him and many others on the 2nd October 1942, after the sinking of the Lisbon Maru.

The sinking of the Lisbon Maru has created many discussions, and I have also received several letters from the relatives of men who were on board when she was sunk by an American submarine.
The first batch of prisoners had already been successfully transported to Japan immediately after we had been taken prisoner, On the 25th September 1942 more prisoners were embarking aboard the Lisbon Maru under the command of Lieutenant Walda of the Imperial Japanese army.
A total of 1,816 men and officers were accommodated in three holds.

On September 27th 1942 George and nearly 2,000 other British prisoners were loaded on the 4,000 ton cargo ship Lisbon Maru to be taken to Japan to work in Prisoner of War camps.
Shortly after they set sail the Lisbon Maru was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Grouper off some islands near Shang Hai 1st October 1942 — the Japanese Troops on board were transferred to other ships, but the prisoners were battened down under the hatches in the holds as the ship slowly sank.
You may be interested to know that I just completed a book on the loss of the Lisbon Maru for which I intereviewed all the survivors from the ship, three surviving Chinese fishermen involved in the rescue, and the last survivor from the Grouper.
