An important point in the movie is that the bad guys, who are pursuing the guardsmen, aren't really Cajuns, although the guardsmen, whose view of the natives of the area is quite simplistic, classes them all as "Cajuns." (thanks to Linda Coleman for this observation) Rather violent.

The last section, presented documentary-style and set in modern times (i.e., the early 1920s) explains that all the symptoms of witchcraft — kleptomania, pyromania, sleepwalking, and insensitive areas on the back — can be attributed to a common disease known as “hysteria.” For an 80-year old movie, that’s not too bad.
The movie asks the question by dropping a schoolful of boys on an uninhabited island.

As I mentioned in my original posting, this was a list I came up with in 1999, providing what I'd consider to be the most important common cultural touchstones in films from the 20th century.
There are 5 movies on this list which I have told myself that I will never see under any circumstances.
Even considering that about 80 percent of movies are crap, and another 15 percent are somewhat worthwhile, that leaves hundreds and hundreds of terrific movies to be seen.

The kids, meanwhile, suffer from an allergy to direct sunlight, so the house is always shuttered and suffused with a muted, soft light that in itself is hugely spooky and suggestive of all sorts of (quite probably awful) secrets.
There are an awful lot of people who hate this movie, and if jerky hand-held camera action, zero narrative and a sudden ending that seems to resolve nothing are the sorts of things that bother you, then you're probably not a fan.

But as color processes improved and became as affordable as fl-and-white film, more and more movies were filmed in color after the end of World War II, as the industry in America came to view color an essential to attracting audiences in its competition with television, which remained a fl-and-white medium until the mid-60s.
However, the cataclysmic failure of some heavily-promoted movies that were harshly reviewed, as well as the unexpected success of critically praised independent movies indicates that extreme critical reactions can have considerable influence.
There are a few movies every year that defy this rule, often limited-release movies that start in only a few theaters and actually grow their theater count through good word-of-mouth and reviews.

But by 1933, after years of victimizing exploitation, she had gone into serious decline and retired due to hard-drinking, exhaustion, gambling, emotional problems, a poor choice of roles, the revelation of a heavy working-class Brooklyn accent in the talkies, and a burgeoning weight problem.
